Nugget# 96 Life lesson from SUE THOMAS: F.B.Eye!

08

Sue(Deanne) with Levi (Jesse)…Notice his ID!! 🙂

Hi Friends,

Firstly, let me apologize for not being around for a while. Hope you’ve been doing great. At my end, I’ve been going through some fine learning experiences here in the University of Life. Nobody really prefers to enroll at the School of Life’s Hard Knocks and this post is especially dedicated to all those of us who have graduated from there! 🙂

img20021188527hi

The real Sue Thomas F.B.I. with her hearing dog Grace!

I’ve recently been enjoying watching the famous Sue ThomasF.B.Eye,a critically acclaimed groundbreaking TV series inspired by the true story of Sue Thomas, who although profoundly deaf from the age of 18 months, overcame significant obstacles to work surveillance for the F.B.I. Incidentally, Deanne Bray, who plays the role of Sue is herself a severely deaf actress who was also strongly encouraged by her parents to speak and read lips.

As portrayed in the series, Sue Thomas is about to start her first real job – which happens to be with the F.B.I. Though initially underestimated, very soon she is recognized for her intelligence and unique lip reading skills and she lives her hard earned dream when she along with her adorable hearing dog Levi join the bureau’s elite surveillance team.

78849-1

The awesome team from (Left-Right)  Dimitri,Tara,Bobby,Lucy,Myles,Levi,Sue & Jack

Joining Sue, Levi and Jack on the team are Bobby Manning, a charismatic agent who likes to bend the rules; Dimitrius Gans, the senior member of the surveillance unit; Lucy Dotson, the team’s right hand support person and Sue’s best friend & roommate ; Myles Leland III, the Boston born, Harvard educated, self-proclaimed ‘Einstein with a gun;’ and Tara Williams, the quirky but brilliant go-to tech expert.

This is a show about courage & perseverance, it not only keeps us on the edge of our seat, but also makes us laugh & cry. Though there are many lessons that one could learn from this delightful series (a real breath of fresh air in the highly contaminated & toxic atmosphere of TV entertainment today), the one that I would like to share is IDENTITY.

When we split up the word Identity, we come up with ‘I’  & ‘dent.’ The pronoun ‘I’ refers to the real us without any apology, compromise or mask ; it refers to the basic core of who we really are,our strengths and weaknesses just as they are.

The other part dent refers to 1) a notch or hollow made by a blow or pressure. 2) An impression or effect made usually against resistance.

Like I said in the beginning, we are all dented by life. To succeed, we need to grab life by the horns anyway with absolutely no excuses and seek to live out our dreams boldly and courageously no matter what the odds or obstacles. In the story, Sue cannot hear and even speaks with a lisp. But she uses what she has which is her unique lip reading skills that she has worked on since her childhood. Her mother has been her guiding force always reminding her that in spite of her disability, she could be everything she wanted to as long as she worked twice as hard. She skates, sings and plays the piano as well. If she was like any other person, I doubt she would have inspired us as much. It is her ‘Dent’ that makes her so beautiful and compassionate. She knows what it is to be unwanted, to be the odd one out. And that is what causes her to select Levi in spite of the abuse that he had been through. She in a way empowers him and he ends up saving her life!

It is when we fully accept the ‘I’ in Identity, which includes the good, bad and the ugly (dents & all)…. both in ourselves as well as in others , That is the divine moment when we have ceased to simply exist and truly live our life to its fullest!animated-flower-image-0091 Click for the  WHO I AM song with favorite sneak peeks from the Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye …Enjoy!

Nugget # 93 Life lesson from an Electric Insect Killer Bat!

mosquito-killer-racket-250x250

Hi friends,

It’s been a while now…., hope all of you are doing well. This morning as I was peacefully sitting and enjoying some music with the windows open for fresh air circulation, I watched a fly enter the room. Within moments my serenity was gone as I was now totally distracted by the insect flying all around me. Agitated, I immediately reached out for my Electric Insect Killer Bat and started to sway it around. It was then that I realized that as I had failed to plug it in, there was not enough electric charge and hence it was useless. I immediately plugged the bat into a power source and waited for it to recharge, that is when this nugget hit me.

All of us are just like that electric fly swatter with immense potential and abilities. We are designed with exactly what we need in ourselves to achieve our God given purpose in life, but there is a catch…..just like that electric fly swatter was ineffective because it hadn’t been plugged into the power source and hence there was no charge in it, similarly no matter how great the potential within us, we will be unable to do anything unless we are charged into our power source- the Lord God Almighty. Trying in our own strength to make things happen is just as frustrating as swaying around the uncharged fly swatter. No matter how long or how hard we try, we will not be able to achieve success; instead we may get sore arms and be filled with disillusionment and self doubt.

The time spent in recharging the electric fly swatter was not a waste, as within a matter of 15 minutes, the bat was fully charged and fit to be used. I aimed and swayed it ….and that was the end of the pest! How similar is our case, as we draw power from God Almighty by spending time in prayer and the Word of God, we become dynamite and are filled with strength from above to fulfill our calling here on earth with an ease and confidence, how can we not succeed then?

Have a great week!

Nugget # 76 Life lesson from the movie ENGLISH VINGLISH!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a very valuable life lesson I learnt from the recently released Bollywood film English Vinglish. A feel good movie for people of all ages. You can read the story line and review here.

Click here for Title Song: http://youtu.be/jqxF6MT4sZo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxF6MT4sZo

The lesson I learnt from Shashi (Sridevi) is the importance of Self respect. It’s admirable how this selfless wife and mother finally makes a decision to do something for herself (learn English) after being put down repeatedly by her husband and teenage daughter for not being able to speak English. She capitalizes on an opportunity that comes her way, by believing in herself and secretly working very hard. She finally surprises everyone with a Speech (about marriage and relationships) in perfect English and thus earns for herself the much deserved respect of all she knows; something that she had always yearned for.

In today’s highly competitive world, genuine appreciation/ encouragement and pats on the back never come easy and so in order to be truly happy, we need to learn how to be our own best friend first. It is when we love and respect ourselves that we can get ahead in life. And the way we treat ourselves often sets the standard for others to treat us.

Self-respect cannot be hunted. It cannot be purchased. It is never for sale. It cannot be fabricated out of public relations. It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth we have spoken it. ~Whitney Griswold

Nugget # 68 Life lesson from a Dripping tap!

Hi friends,

Just yesterday I watched my kitchen tap dripping water one little drop after another.I randomly placed a big vessel under it to avoid wastage. Imagine my surprise when I woke up the next morning and found the vessel filled to the brim! On its own, each drop looked harmlessly negligible but consistent dripping over a period of time had made all the difference! The same thing applies to our life. Every small effort towards a certain goal may seem futile of its own but in the long run it works towards the achievement of the goal.

There is a poem I learnt in my childhood that well describes this:

“Little drops of water Little grains of sand Make the mighty ocean And the beauteous land

Little deeds of kindness, Little words of love, Make our earth an Eden, Like the heaven above

And the little moments, Humble though they be, Make the mighty ages. Of eternity.”

Mrs. J. A. Carney (1845)

Friend, is there something that you have been putting off for lack of a chunk of time or for lack of all the resources required to turn your dream into a reality? Why not try using the small pockets of time here and there and the few available resources towards achievement of your goal slowly and steadily? Most probably, before you even know it you will have accomplished that which earlier seemed impossible! Best wishes to working towards making all of your dreams come true! 🙂

Lyrics of the song: “If you want your dream to be, build it slow and surely Small beginnings greater ends Heart felt works go purely If you want to live life free Take your time go slowly Do few things but do them well Simple joy O holy Day by day, stone by stone Build your secrets slowly Day by day you’ll grow too You’ll know heavens glory.”

Nugget of life:Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what? Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” – Mark Victor Hansen

Have a beautiful weekend,

Nugget # 65 Life is like a See-saw!

Hi friends,

This week I would like to compare Life to a See-saw.

Life is like a See-saw with its every ‘down’, there is an ‘up’.

As mentioned in my earlier post, many times things change in our life rather unexpectedly. People change, situations change, obstacles and problems change and we learn to change in order to cope with this ever changing life. Just as for the see-saw to be proper in its functioning, it has to be in movement with one side up and the other side down, the see-saw of life too is never static and always changes with one side up and the other side down. The only one constant in this See-saw of Life is our relationship with God.

While on the Down-side of life, it is good to remember the eaglet story in which the momma eagle pushes her baby off the edge in order that it will flap its wings and learn to fly first and then soar high. Often we may feel the dread of the little eaglet as we reach the edge of the precipice and are pushed hard by the hand of circumstance into the unknown.  But as we step out of our comfort zone, we can be sure of one thing and that is we can never fall beyond where His able hands will catch us. It is in such situations that we learn of an inner strength that we possess that helps us to let go and let God and that becomes our Up-side! 🙂

Nugget of Life: “It is always darkest before the dawn, so if it’s your down phase now, hang in there because your up phase is right round the corner”

Have a wonderful week,

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie

Nugget # 63 Life lesson from a Hot Air Balloon!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a life lesson from a hot air balloon.

The mechanism of the hot air balloon is pretty simple; it works on the principle that since hot air is lighter than cold air, when the air inside the balloon is heated up, it causes the balloon to rise and when the air inside the balloon is cooled it causes the balloon to sink. In this manner the air pilot can maneuver the balloon and the people can enjoy their ride.

The hot air balloons before the modern period used to have sandbags (see pic) to weigh them down until lift off and after that the sand was gradually dumped for the balloon to gain height in the air. The same thing is applicable in human life also.

Often in order to rise high in life we may have to cut off heavy weights that keep us down. These may be in the form of bad habits like laziness /being short tempered / sloppiness or having the wrong kind of friends, sometimes even memories of past failures. As long as they weigh us down, we will never be able to rise to heights in life. Just like the sand bags are dumped before the take off  by cutting the ropes attached to them, we too must sever all those things that hold us back from being able to ride high and being all that we want to be in life.

Click to watch MR BEAN and his HOT AIR BALLOON Ride!   http://youtu.be/hLYU3PudcF8

                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLYU3PudcF8

Nugget of Life: Let go of the things that weigh you down so that there will then be enough room in your life to welcome the things that could lift you up.

Have a terrific week.

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie

Nugget # 40 Life lesson from a bouncing ball

“No matter how hard life pushes you down,no matter how much you hurt, you can always bounce back.”- Sheryl Swoopes.”

Children love to play with balls. All of us are aware of  how no matter how hard we hit a ball, it bounces back every time.Similar is our case in life no matter how tough life gets, we need to develop a “bounce back” mentality and get back in life.Easier said than done? Trust me, I know what you mean. This week I’d like to share 20 tips that can help us bounce back in life no matter how tough life may get!

1)Be your own best friend and Advocate– It is often because we put others opinions /thoughts/feelings before ours that we get hurt.We need to avoid putting ourselves in positions of self sabotage and learn to operate in compassion and kindness first to ourself and then to others.

2)Slow Down – Sometimes we just need to draw the curtains and get some rest. Most problems are solved after a good night’s sleep.

3)Nutrition- Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthy, nutritious and timely meals.Getting into the kitchen and cooking a wholesome meal is often therapeutic for me!

4)Music- Listen, sing, dance to upbeat music with uplifting lyrics.Avoid the temptation to listen to sad music,it  dampens the spirit.

5)Dress up and get out of the house- Go for a walk, greet the neighbours, enjoy the scenery, hear the birds sing.

6)Get Inspired – Read/listen/watch inspirational books/blogs/websites/movies.

7) Talk it out – Meet with a mature/trustworthy friend and talk it out. Avoid the blame game, instead think of solutions and ask for practical advice. All of us go through similar problems and we can learn from one another.

8)Get support- Connect with family and people you love and who love you.

9)Have fun – Do something you enjoy; visit a book store/library,go get a facial,buy yourself a new outfit /shoes.

10)Avoid Toxic People- Lets face it, we have hit rock bottom and so we now need to be careful in choosing the people we really want in our life. Read this powerful post by a blogger friend Ebony for a fuller understanding.

11)Spend time with Kids – Play with little children and make them laugh. They will love you in a minute and will let you know that without any reservations.I guarantee phenomenal results! 😉

12)Give thanks – Make a Gratitude list of things you are grateful for in your life.

13)Use your creativity to turn your negative experience into something positive– Paint/journal/write a poem/make a scrap book , do something constructive with your adversity. So that as time passes and the wound heals, you will have a pleasant memory of it.

14)Find the purpose behind your pain-Without overanalysis /reliving your agony try and decide what you can do differently next time to avoid it.

15) Give yourself the gift of time-  Often well meaning people will tell us to just “snap out of it” or may generalize/ minimize our pain without even knowing the full details of what is really happening. Just smile and ignore their comments and do what you need to do. We owe it to ourselves to be honest and real with our own feelings and to allow ourselves time to get over the pain.Only if the wound heals fully will we be able to stand again confidently, so dont rush the process. What may be easy for them may not be so for us and what may be easy for us may not be so for them; so let us take our time but stand strong when we do!

16) Hug someone you love- There are few hurts that a loving hug cannot heal.Hug a loved one, a child or maybe even a pet dog! 😉

17)Stop talking and start looking- When the tough times come, open your eyes and ears, look around and see who are still there. Adversity is a good time to recognize our real friends. No matter who we are, we are not entitled by birth to kindness from anyone and so we need to be grateful everytime someone genuinely cares enough to let us know they do and we also need to make a mental note of being there for them in their point of need too.

18)Smile- No matter how big our mountain or how deep our valley, one thing is certain and that is it will pass. So let us hang in there and say to ourself “This too shall pass.”  And then SMILE 😉

19)Realization of limits- People may definitely help/encourage us but it is God alone who can deliver us. Let us be grateful for every kind hearted person around but ultimately see the hand of the Almighty behind them.

20)Pray- Talk to God, He loves to hear you talk!

These are some of the steps that helped me during my tough times and may help you too.We all have our own ways of dealing and coping with tough times, feel free to share a tip if one comes to mind. It  may help someone. I love this quote: “Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”

Nugget of Life : “Winners never quit and quitters never win.”

Have a bouncy week!;)

Nugget # 33 Life is an Experiment!

“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE???

Hi friends,

According to Peter Bregman: “When we live life as an experiment, we are far more willing to take risks, to acknowledge failure, to learn and develop. That’s what experiments are all about: discovery and growth. There is no real failure in an experiment because it’s all data. If something doesn’t work, that’s simply data that leads to changing behavior to see if something else does work.”

What exactly do we mean by RISK? Taking a Risk does not mean we thoughtlessly endanger ourselves by being rash/ presumptuous. OTOH, it means we carefully evaluate our situation and take calculated risks. Again there is always a 50% chance of failure here but that would be better than the 100% chance of failure by never attempting anything at all.

To put it in a simple equation, Calculated Risk = Boldness + Forethought.

“Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one has better abilities or ideas but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk – and to act.” – Andre Malraux

I love this quote by William Shedd: “A Ship is safe in harbor but that’s not what ships are for.”

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.”-Mark Twain

Enjoy this poem which teaches us that everything really worth doing in life is a risk. So I’d say, GO AHEAD & JUST DO IT!

RISKS – Janet Rand

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool,
To weep is to risk being called sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement.
To expose feelings is to risk showing your true self.
To place your ideas and your dreams before the crowd is to risk being called naive.
To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure

But risks must be taken, because the greatest risk in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing.
He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow or love.
Chained by his certitude, he is a slave; he has forfeited his freedom.
Only the person who risks is truly free.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!

Nugget # 29 Life is like Boxing!

Fight one more round when your feet are so tired that you have to shuffle back to the centre of the ring.Fight one more round when your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands to come on guard.Fight one more round when your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired that you wish your opponent would rack you in the jaw and put you to sleep.Fight one more round remembering that the man who always fights one more round is never whipped.”- James Corbett, the famous boxer.

Hi friends,

I recently watched SAAWARIYA, which I didn’t really like but from which I got this lovely gem which is the real inspiration behind this post. In the first half of the movie the protagonist, the charming Saawariya (Ranbir) meets the lovely Sakina (Sonam Kapoor) for the first time. On seeing her downcast eyes, he enacts to her this life changing truth that puts into her (and I hope into you too today) , the spirit to FIGHT ONE MORE ROUND!

Ranbir Raj : “Pretend life is like a boxing ring and unhappiness is your opponent. It has countless hands but you have two. If it appears before you, don’t be afraid. Look straight into its eyes…. understand and gauge its strength and then ….[don’t forget unhappiness is a very strong opponent.] Now start fighting. Move. Bounce. It will first get you in the face. You will be hurt. No worries, keep fighting. With the next hit, you will fall but the trick is to stand up and face it. Because if you give up by the 3rd round, then every punch will fill your eyes with tears, every jab will steal the smile from your lips. By the 5th round, it’ll force its way into your home…and snatch away all happiness. By the 6th round, everything you love will be finished. It will be a total knock out and the winner will be unhappiness….Yes! Yes! Yes!…..

Ranbir’s tone is so powerfully challenging that we scream back along with Sakina – NO! and we are encouraged to Fight one More Round just as she did …. she laughs and so does he;  mission accomplished! I liked the ending of the movie where we see him fighting one more round, this time alone but – the opponent (unhappiness)and the spot remain the same! 😉

In my attempt to share the above truth with you, I looked up BOXING for the first time ever and came across this amazing write up from which I learnt some really interesting and new things about Boxing. Below are some of the highlights. To enjoy the excellent piece, click here.

1) Boxing is a reflection of life. It has both the nasty and the good things we experience in life- greed and hate, dishonesty and corruption, pain and failure pride and grace, honor and nobility, honesty and pure pleasure.

2) Boxing is about Self discipline & Dedication: It is a sport of constant training of both the body and mind. Unlike in team sports, in boxing there is no one else to depend on but yourself.

3) Boxing is about mental strength- A fighter can be in perfect shape. His skills can be sharp as a razor, his reflexes can be honed like a jungle cat, but if his mind is not strong his body will fail. “The battle has already begun and the bell for round one has not even rung.”

4) Boxing gives you the greatest feeling in the world. It makes you feel alive. Is there any joy greater than the taste of victory? Is there anything more bitter then defeat?

5) Boxing is the struggle to be the best. It’s poetry in motion. It is art at its highest form. It’s the sweet science. It’s watching two professionals with a true understanding of the trade putting on a show.

6) Boxing is about giving everything you have- determination, durability & power but it is also a sport of self discovery. Fighters are the most special of people. They understand that it’s their job to get into a ring and fight another person, but they also understand that it’s a time of self-discovery.

7) Boxing like life, is an individual sport; ultimately, it is up to the individual to fail or succeed.

–  Source: Why I love Boxing –James Roll (East Side Boxing)

Wow…I loved that amazing write up… and now, can you believe it?  I love BOXING!!! 😉

Nugget of Life :  When life punches you in the face and you find yourself hurt and flat on the floor, remind yourself that YOU are a champion, gingerly get up, brace yourself and then FIGHT ONE MORE ROUND! YOU will definitely be the winner.

Enjoy this inspiring BOXING Video: Click : http://youtu.be/IoUQRglIhi8

Happy Boxing! Have a great week.

Cheers,

Nugget # 27 Life is sweaty, but it’s definitely worth it!

“The job of a football coach is to make men do what they don’t want to do, in order to achieve what they have always wanted to be.” –Tom Landry

Hi friends, this week  I’d like to share something I learnt just this morning. I was reading from a book  ‘Brave Honest Questions Women Ask’ and came to this portion where the author mentioned the above quote while trying to explain a new term that made me stop, sit up, and reflect. The new term was *SLUG POTENTIAL – and it refers to those things we knowingly allow ourselves to indulge in and thus set ourselves up for unfavorable consequences. In simple words, it is those things we know we should/ shouldn’t do but end up doing because we just “slug” it off.  For instance, the extra cookie we know we should avoid / the TV addiction/ the Alcohol/ the Uncontrolled Shopping Spree/Approval Addiction /Lack of Exercise/Work holism ? Each of our cases is unique. My area of slug potential may be your area of triumph and vice versa. The important thing is for us to locate our “slug potential” / that area of indulgence that has been keeping us from achieving total fulfillment in every aspect of our life.

Let’s admit it guys, LIFE IS SWEATY. In fact, it is sweat, blood, toil and tears but in the end, isn’t it TRULY WORTH IT ? I take this opportunity to thank a blogger buddy who has bestowed me with the “LIFE IS WORTH THE LIVING BLOGGER AWARD.” Yipee ! Yay! A special thanks to Balladeer , an amazing blogger and wonderful person.

As for me, I think it’s high time I get some dirt on my squeaky clean running shoes – that have been beckoning to me for a long time, but I have been making excuses with. Yes, you’ve guessed right, my area of slug potential ! Friend, is there some area in life that you could refer to as your slug potential? Would you like to start doing something about it today? Let us decide to start from where we are and do what we can to become VICTORS instead of VICTIMS in that area of our life.

Some Motivational Quotes to get us started:

“The longest journey starts with a single step.”- Lao Tzu

“The trademark for SUCCESS is the SWEAT BAND!”

“Sweat is the cologne of accomplishment.” – Halewood Hale Broun

“Success is a ladder you cannot climb with your hands in your pockets”.

“Nobody ever drowned in his own sweat”- Ann Landers.

“The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

“Be afraid not of growing slowly, only of standing still.”

Every person who has achieved any success in life has worked hard to get there. I love this poem which speaks so profoundly about how often the crowds just dismiss hard earned success with words like Destiny or Luck. Personally, I’ve always hated the word!

LUCK :

He worked by day, And toiled by night.

He gave up play and some delight.

Dry books he read, New things to learn.

And forged ahead, Success to earn.

He plodded on with Faith and pluck,

And when he won, Men called it LUCK!
