Nugget # 88 Life lesson from a Jammed Finger !

550px-Treat-a-Broken-Finger-Step-4Bullet2Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a nugget that came to mind as I nursed my bruised finger.

Last Saturday, I accidentally jammed my ring finger as I was hurrying into a supermarket elevator. My finger turned pale and it pained me. So we went to the orthopedist who suggested an X-ray which confirmed no broken bones, but only a slight injury to the soft tissue on my knuckle.

Relieved to hear that, I went with the nurse who taped my injured finger to the unhurt finger next to it. This process is called buddy taping where we use the unaffected finger as a splint to keep the injured finger from moving too much and aggravating the injury.

Later, on reaching home, as I tried to do my daily chores, I was finding it difficult to move my finger since it had been taped to the other one. But that made me draw a paralell to our ordinary everyday lives.

Many times in life we may get jammed or injured and at that time if we ignore our hurt and just go on as if nothing happened, later in the long run, we will have to face the dire consequences of a serious damage due to neglect. Just like in the case of the injury we used a buddy splint, in our real life situations also, when hurt, the right move will be to open up to a buddy/persons we can trust and pray with. We may also brainstorm with them about how we can solve the issue. If nothing else, we will be able to experience a few moments of temporary relief at least instead of carrying the heavy load ourselves.

Just like in the case of my finger, we will remove the buddy tape when the swelling and pain have subsided and the finger is healed. Similarly, after some time, when we have drawn enough strength and courage, we will be able to move ahead more confidently in our life.

PS: My finger is healed and I have removed the buddy splint! : )

Have a blessed week!

Nugget # 87 Life is a Process!

1Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share the importance of understanding one word and that is “PROCESS”. For the people of today’s generation, the word may be quite familiar with food processors which speed up our cooking , however the nugget I’d like to share talks about process in the opposite sense. Let me explain this with the help of an easily understood illustration. Consider a woman who just finds out she is pregnant, she is overjoyed and shares the good news with her loved ones. Some moments of pure bliss but as days and weeks go by, there comes the nausea and the tiredness and the vomiting and the aches and pains and suddenly it doesn’t all seem so much fun. So what does she do? Well, there is nothing else she can do but continue and let the process go on. As long as she goes on doing what she has to do, eating right, exercising right, taking her supplements and going for her regular check ups, the baby in her will grow healthier and then after her wait of 9 months, will come her moment of joy when she can finally hold the newborn baby in her hands.

The time and the sacrifices and the pain she undergoes will only make her baby more precious to her. The same thing applies to us in our life. All of us have to go through different processes in life and just like the lady, not every stage may be desirable, we need to stick with it and go through each stage with full cooperation in order to reach where we want to or get what we want. Some of us may have a dream that may seem in no way attainable as of today but if we consistently work towards smaller goals in that direction we will in the long run after having overcome many milestones, finally be able to reach where we once dreamt of reaching.

Friend, what is it that you would like to do or become in your wildest dream? Remember, you need to go through the process, every day should draw you nearer to your dream. Even when you feel like you haven’t achieved much , consistently keep trying to do more each day and one day you will find yourself living your dream.

Nugget # 84 Life lesson from one of the best American Movies ever made!

itsawonderfullifecer1art1

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share something that came to mind as I watched the 1946 American Christmas Drama film called ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’

It is the story of George Bailey , a man who has had to give up his dreams of traveling and going places in order to help others. Frustrated and feeling like a failure he opts for suicide on Christmas Eve. He is miraculously saved by the intervention of his guardian angel Clarence who shows George all the lives he has unknowingly touched and how different life in his community would be had he never been born.

This movie set me thinking of how many of us like George may not really be aware of the lives that we are responsible for changing by some small act of ours. Often we may not be doing any great thing, many times we may never even be in the lime light only behind doors and doing our duties faithfully not even aware of the mighty influence we may be having on someone somewhere! At this point I am reminded of an incident when my sister-in-law shared some money with a family who was struggling. Later on they told her that they were contemplating suicide and it was her action that made them change their mind. We may never fully know here and now how crucial our small acts of concern and kindness can be. It took a supernatural visitation to open George’s eyes. Let this movie do that for us and open our eyes to the truth that truly, our life is pretty awesome and it’s a Wonderful Life after all!

For those of you who would like to watch the movie, here’s the link: http://youtu.be/frXklECPkD0

Nugget # 28 Life lessons from an old donkey!

Hi friends, today I’d like to share with you a story of a wise old donkey.

One day, a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to him to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally peered down the well and  was astounded by what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and take a step up on the new layer of dirt. As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, to the shock and astonishment of all the onlookers, the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and trotted off happily!

These are 2 lessons I learnt from the story:

1)Often in life we may find ourselves in deep wells and life may shovel all kinds of dirt onto us but instead of letting the dirt bury us ,we need to refuse to give up and shake it off and step up on it!

2) The story starts with the donkey crying for help but ends with the donkey happily trotting away. What was the reason for this change? When the donkey realized that his survival depended on himself, it is only then that he realized his inner strength. Age had weakened his body but sharpened his mind. Often it takes some hard knocks in life for us to realize our true inner mettle and strength! Don’t look around for help, but look within.

Nugget of Life : The only difference between Stumbling Stones and Stepping Stones is the way in which we use them!  We can either complain about the obstacle or we can choose to climb over it.

Here are some inspiring life stories of people who changed their Scars into their Stars!

1)Some of the best music was composed by Beethoven. His handicap was that he was deaf.

2)Some of the best poetry written on nature was written by Milton, he was blind.

3)Helen Keller was both blind and deaf and yet her contributions to society is more than any hearing or seeing person could ever have done in his lifetime. Her life continues to be an inspiration to many of us who love her quotes. One of my favorites is ” Kindness is a language the blind can see and the deaf can hear.” I wonder if we would have got to hear this amazing truth from her had she not known blindness and deafness herself.

4)One of the greatest world leaders was US Psdt  Franklin D Roosevelt, he served from a wheelchair

5)And now to share with you one of my heroines. Enjoy this Video of Jessica Cox – the first armless pilot in History! She is the woman who JUST DOES IT!

PS: 6)And there is one more person who definitely should be added to this list and he is JAMES JOYCE *(thanks for bringing it to my notice BalladeerHere’s what I found out after reading up on the life of James Joyce ; One of the most infuential writers of the early 20th century ; best known for his landmark novel Ulysses. He has undergone every kind of suffering imaginable –  Just to mention a few, death of 2 of his siblings (typhoid),life-long cynophobia (abnormal fear of dogs after being bitten by a dog), keraunophobia (fear of thunder & lightning) , suspension from work, poverty, medical college drop out, loss of his mother to cancer which devastated him, severe drinking problem, terrible money management problems, his wife suffered from schizophrenia , eye problems that required over a dozen surgeries which ultimately rendered him blind and finally his fatal ulcer problem! – And we complain about suffering? – I think this man definitely takes the prize for turning his scars into his stars ! What do you think?

Have a great week,

Cheers,

Nugget # 21 Life is a complicated Tapestry

Life is a complicated Tapestry, woven with a loom and shuttle. Heredity, environment, relationships, experiences, health, spirituality, education, career, interests, life’s joys and sorrows – all of these are like the different colored strings that pass from one side of the loom to the other. And this action together with our responses weaves the design in the Tapestry of our Life.

As we look at the different colored balls of strings, the incomplete picture, the uncertainty of completion we may feel doubtful, maybe at times even overwhelmed for it undoubtedly is a complicated tapestry! We may not always understand all parts of the process or why certain things happen when they do happen but we still need to keep on weaving. Though each individual strand may seem fragile and insignificant on its own; each one is an integral part of the Bigger Picture!

NUGGET OF LIFE: If we wait to know all the answers and then start to do something, we will wait forever. So let’s just keep weaving believing that one day, we will get our answers and then suddenly everything will make perfect sense.

Have a great week!

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie

Nugget # 18 Life is like a Rubik’s Cube

“Life is like a Rubik’s cube – sometimes you have to make it worse before you can make it better.”

The Rubik’s Cube is a “magic cube” invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally intended for his students to better understand 3D structures; today it is the world’s top selling puzzle game.

There are about 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possible permutations for a Rubik’s cube but there is only 1 right solution! I mean, can things ever get more complicated than that? And the amazing thing is that any Rubik’s Cube can be solved in less than or equal to 22 moves! Children of Man play with and successfully master the complex Rubik’s Cube, and yet Man doubts himself when it comes to dealing with the complexities of his life!

I agree, Life is complicated but now, let’s put things in proper perspective : Life is unfair but it is unfair to everyone, so life is fair! What happens to us does not really matter as much as what we make of it when it does! If life hands us bitter lemons, let’s add some sugar and make some good lemonade!

NUGGET OF LIFE: Sometimes it gets worse before it gets better! And when it does, just hang in there and say to yourself “Everything happens for a Reason”!

Enjoy this beautiful Video; it may change your life forever!

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie
