Nugget # 104 Life lessons from Flying birds!

birds_flying_in_formation_md_wm_v2Hi friends,

Hope you are all doing well. It’s been a while since I’ve penned down something. These days with winter setting in, we can see some clear changes in the environment around us. The days seem shorter and the nights seem longer. It is indeed a sight to behold different kinds of birds flying surprisingly rather low and in large numbers across the sky and watching them has become my latest hobby! 🙂 Let me share with you a few thoughts that come to mind when I think of them! I have categorized them into 6 Fs. Let us see them one by one!

  • Flexible – The birds are flexible. They are not rigid in their flight. They change their patterns of flying according to the others in the flock. They are not stubborn or egoistical but are focused on their destination. We can learn from them how to be flexible especially when working in a team.
  • Fun – Though their flight is headed towards a particular place, the birds do not forget to have fun on the way. They don’t forget to sing and there is a grace and speed when they fly. They are not bored or lazy but enjoy the flying. Similarly, we too should ensure that we have kept enough margin for hobbies, rest and relaxation in our To Do Lists. When we can make our work fun by innovation and using our creativity and whatever talents we may have, it is then that we will actually begin to enjoy our work.
  • Fit – The bodies of birds are usually fit for flight. If they are overweight, they will be slowed down and will not be able to keep pace and fly in sync with the other birds. The same thing can be applied to us too. Being fit gives us the stamina and positive energy we require to fly high in life.
  • Flocks – Birds usually fly in flocks. As the saying goes, “Birds of a feather flock together.” We too should surround ourselves with the kind of people who have a similar vision and passion for life as we do. There is strength in unity but we need to make sure to associate with the right kind of people as we can learn from others and attain success more quickly than if we tried alone.
  • Fearless – The birds are fearless as they flap their wings and go higher and higher even against the wind. Their bodies are streamlined which enables them to fight against the air resistance by reducing friction so that the air will just glide past them without blocking it. Same thing applies to us.  What seems to us as our weakness may actually become our biggest blessing if we overcome fear and do what we can.Sometimes we may even have to ‘do it afraid’ but small victories will help us gain confidence to do better the next time.
  • Free – When thinking of a bird, the first phrase that comes to most of us is “as free as a bird!” That means we are completely free to do what we want without any worries. Most of the time we are not free because we are in the PAST or in the FUTURE. The antidote to this is to LIVE IN THE MOMENT- Present Tense! 🙂

Nugget # 95 Life is like a game of Scrabble!

scrabbleHi friends,

Hope you are all doing good. It’s been a while now but I havn’t been able to sit down ,process and pen down my thoughts. A lot had been happening, the most joyful being the birth of my second son.:)

Today as I was playing a game of Scrabble with my elder son, this nugget came to mind.

We were playing a junior version of the famous board game Scrabble. In which each player gets to pick at random 5 tiles with a letter on it from a Scrabble Bag. We were then to place the letters on the Board which had different letters on it .Each player got a turn to place a tile of his choice and watch the board as the next player places a tile of his choice. The main aim was to complete the words on the Game Board. And for every word we made, we would get a blue coin. The person with the most blue coins would be the winner of the game.

Well as the game progressed, my son was leading and then suddenly I got a letter J and made a word he wanted to make. I watched in amusement as his little face crinkled up and he took the tile I had just placed on the board  (which entitled to me my first blue coin) and put it back in the scrabble bag and shake the bag so that the coin would be lost. …suddenly it struck me, isn’t this typical of what we do to one another in this rat race of life?

  • We all have been given tiles at random, we don’t get to choose and pick what we are given.- Each one of us has been given from God a unique fingerprint, personal characteristics, quirks, strengths and weaknesses. We got to learn to play with what we have got and allow others to play with what they have got.
  • Just because we don’t like a person or that person doesn’t fit into our idea of what is right or even a likely candidate for success , doesn’t  change the fact that the person does have the vital tile necessary for completing the word on the board.
  • If we discredit the person and snatch the tile from the person and put it into the scrabble bag and shake it as my son did, we may still be ahead in the game, but we have denied the next person the joy of contributing something. More importantly, the game comes to a standstill so   in a way we are obstructing the progress of the game.
  • We should never lose focus of the object why we are playing the game. As I checked the object of the game, this is what was written: To spell each word on the board using the letter tiles. Players identify the words based on the pictures on the board. Any player who completes a word takes a blue coin from the Scrabble Bag. When all the words on the board are covered, the player with the most coins is the winner. Wouldn’t it be better if we just focused on completing the words on the board rather than on who was winning…Of course there will be a winner for each game but how much better it would be to just play our best and enjoy the Board game and find out who wins most coins at the end…
  • The same thing applies to our relationships in life, the people we work with, our spouses, our relatives, our friends, our churches, let’s work in a spirit of Unity and try and empower one another by looking out for the best in each other and putting forward our very best.
  • Each of us has a vital piece necessary for completion of this Board Game of Life. None of us can do it alone. We need each other to complete the game. I am reminded of the acronym TEAM- Together Everyone Achieves More. True, we may achieve a lot in this life by pushing ourselves up by putting other people down but how much better to handhold each other and walk together to a quicker & better success. The pity of participating in life as if it were a rat race is just that in the end of it all, you remain a rat! We are more than that, we are unique creations of the Most High God.
  • Like in a symphony, all the musical instruments should play their part without any one instrument dominating; we all have got our little bit to do in making this life a beautiful one. You may think , what will I do with just this one tile in my hand?, True, alone we can do NOTHING, but when we come together with the other pieces on the Board, we are able to make meaningful words.

Back to our Board game, I corrected my son and he placed the letter back and I got my blue coin. We completed the game and of course, in the end, my 6 year old was the winner with 4 blue coins!!! 🙂
