Nugget # 32 Life is like a Storybook!

“Our life is like a storybook with many good tales to tell but our best stories will always be the ones of our random acts of kindness.”- Sparky Laurie

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to start by sharing a story that I recently came across.

“The Wise Woman’s Stone”
A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.”-  Author Unknown

All of us have wonderful stories from the pages of our life to tell the world: stories of our fun times, successes, power, influence, strength, courage but the stories that will always be fondly remembered will be the stories of our humanity.

“The best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.”-William Wordsworth

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”- Leo Buscaglia

“You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.”-Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Wherever there is a human being, there is a chance for a kindness.”- Seneca

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak but their echoes are truly endless.”-Mother Teresa

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.”- Philo

I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”- Stephen Grellet.

“How far you go in life depends on you being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and the strong. Because someday in life you will have been all of these.”  George Washington Carver

Of all the people in our lives, I think the elderly and the aged deserve the cream of our heart’s kindness, love and respect. If only we would sit down with them and give them the gift of our “listening ears” and allow them to share with us their stories; the glorious & happy moments of their life! Often we forget that they have lived a full life before us and hence passed through every stage we go through. We enter a whole new world of wisdom as we learn from their valuable experiences. Often many of us presume that they wouldn’t want to be bothered and would like to be left alone with some peace and quiet but studies show that majority of  the old/aged would actually love good company. As in reality, they are lonely souls who are today’s forgotten heroes. Their once sturdy bodies now weak /bent over, their once smooth skin now wrinkled, their once lustrous hair may be just a few thin strands, their eyesight dimmer, their hearing impaired, their voices softer, their memories duller, their tempers shorter…. but if we just cared to look deep into their eyes and sincerely tell them how much they are needed, loved & appreciated, we will most definitely see a twinkle in their eyes, a spring in their step, a song in their heart and a soft smile on their face. That will be our divine moment; when even the vilest of us can feel a genuine holiness within; we will feel a high that no drug can give. That magical moment when we care enough to tell someone that they are loved and that they truly matter to us.Is there an aged person around you whom you can celebrate kindness with?

In this touching Video below, the Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan actually celebrates his grandmother’s 1st birthday*(watch to find out how) on the Grand Finale of the Just Dance Show 2011 It truly brought tears to my eyes as I saw the genuine kindness of this noble soul who cared enough to honor his grandparents in front of the whole watching world. Definitely a lesson we can all learn about not forgetting our roots when we bear fruits.
