Nugget # 47 Life lesson from a Shadow!

Hi friends,

This morning I watched my shadow move on the sunlit ground in front of me. That set me thinking and gave me the nugget for this week.

All of us know what shadows are. On looking it up, this is what I could come up with. By definition, a shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. The cross section of the shadow is in fact a reverse projection of the object blocking the light. The sun causes objects to have shadows and at certain times of the day, when the sun is at certain heights, the lengths of shadows change.

“We never need to fear the Shadows because it only means that there is a light shining near somewhere”- Ruth E Renkel

Shadows are the result of the presence of both light and darkness. If it is total light or total darkness, there would be no shadow at all. All of us have shadows in our life, meaning we have both light and darkness in us. Light represents all that is good such as truth, love, kindness, mercy, patience, charity, loyalty, etc while darkness represents the negativity, unkindness, hatred, intolerance, impatience, miserliness, deception, etc in us that obstructs the light from shining through.

“Every life has dark tracts and long stretches of somber tint, and no representation is true to fact which dips its pencil only in light and flings no shadows on the canvas.”- Alexander MacLaren

“An optimist is a person who sees only the lights in the picture, whereas a pessimist sees only the shadows. An idealist, however, is one who sees the light and the shadows, but in addition sees something else: the possibility of changing the picture, of making the lights prevail over the shadows.”- Author Unknown

As long as we are alive we will always be shadows with our light and dark side. However, just like the sun causes shadows to change by varying its position, similarly we too can cause changes in the Shadows of our life by positioning ourselves either closer or farther from the light source. Either we can move closer to the light and the shadows will become lighter or we can move away from the light and the shadows will become darker.

“Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in our own sunshine” – Henry Ward Beecher

Nugget of Life : ” Keep your face always towards the sunshine – and the shadows will fall behind you.”- Walt Whitman.

Nugget # 30 Life is like Fruit Salad!

Hi friends,

Just imagine a bowl of fruits soaked in creamy vanilla custard with a red cherry on the top, yum! My favorite dessert, any day. Is there anyone who does not love fruit salad?

Now imagine a lovely fruit basket filled with every kind of fruit imaginable- ripe yellow bananas, pretty pink strawberries, lush green kiwis, indigo blue grapes, luscious orange mangoes, ruby red pomegranates, yellow pineapples, juicy oranges , melons , berries etc…the list just goes on. Now we start picking our choice of fruits for the fruit salad.

One look at the fruit basket is enough to tell us how each fruit is so different from the other -right from appearance (shape, color and texture) down to fragrance and taste. All fruits are freshly picked and good but we have our own personal preferences. For instance I love my fruit salad with banana slices, few mango cuts, sliced green grapes and chopped cherries all in vanilla custard. My husband prefers banana slices, kiwis instead of mango and includes pomegranate seeds and nuts for the bite. The basic ingredients remain the same but our choices of fruit combinations vary as I prefer the sweetness of the mango while he likes the sourness of the kiwi.

How similar this is to our life. Each one of us is unique and we have our own special preferences. My preference of mango doesn’t make his choice of kiwi wrong. We are all free to pick and choose what we want but let us also remember to be sensitive enough to respect the choices that others also make.

This Nugget was inspired by a post by Irene, a fellow blogger. I was so happy to hear this young blogger( in her late 20s) speak so beautifully about “Blogger Respect”. Click here to read it. In this world of blogging, we come across so many different kinds of people- we have apples, oranges , strawberries, mangoes, pineapples, kiwis, guavas, etc…etc. “Blogger Respect” to me means learning to accept , if not enjoy each other’s differences. We may also go the extra mile & build each other up (instead of tear each other down) with our words by appreciating the good (if we genuinely find some) in other bloggers and letting them know it. I’ve added a “BLOGGER RESPECT” button as my small way of advocating this noble venture. Feel free to share / use it if you like.

Personally, blogging has been one of the smartest things I’ve ever done. I’ve enjoyed every bit of it and have met some pretty amazing bloggers on the way. Do we agree on everything? No, we don’t, but then what fun would life be if we were all carbon copies of each other? Would there be any scope for learning/growth? I’ve learnt so many new , useful & good things; only because of this diversity……. and now back to my fruit salad, Goodness, can you even imagine? Without the different fruits, there NEVER would be any fruit salad!!! 😦

Long live Unity in Diversity….long live all the fruits in the fruit salad!! 😉

I dedicate this post to each one of you, my blogger friends/acquaintances who have been instrumental in making this blogging journey the wonderful adventure that it is today! Thank you for being YOU and allowing me to be ME!

Nugget # 17 Life is like a flowing river

Life stands with all she has, her arms open wide welcoming us,  “Come and take as much as you want.”. It is Life’s great tragedy that inspite of her generous invitation,we never listen and seize as much as we can when she beckons to us and yet unfulfilled and dissatisfied, we always fill her ears with complaints when the chance is gone! Whose fault is it actually ? Enjoy this beautiful poem which gives us the same message!

I bargained with Life for a penny  –  by Jessie B Rittenhouse

I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.

For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.

Nugget # 14 Life Lessons from REGINA BRETT : A STRING OF 50 PEARLS

Hi … this week I’d like to share with you the best email I have ever received.I call it STRING OF 50 PEARLS. It is actually a column in the Plain Dealer written by a 90 year old woman named Regina Brett.

To quote Regina: “To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most-requested column I’ve ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more:”

1. Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
2. When in doubt, just take the next small step.
3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
4. Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
5. Pay off your credit cards every month.
6. You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
7. Cry with someone. It’s more healing than crying alone.
8. It’s OK to get angry with God. He can take it.
9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.
10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.
11. Make peace with your past so it won’t screw up the present.
12. It’s OK to let your children see you cry.
13. Don’t compare your life to others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn’t be in it.                                                                       15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But don’t worry; God never blinks.
16. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying.
17. You can get through anything if you stay put in today.
18. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write.                                                                                    19. It’s never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else.
20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don’t take no for an answer.
21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
22. Overprepare, then go with the flow.
23. Be eccentric now. Don’t wait for old age to wear purple.
24. The most important sex organ is the brain.
25. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: “In five years, will this matter?”
27. Always choose life.
28. Forgive everyone everything.
29. What other people think of you is none of your business.
30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time.
31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
32. Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
33. Believe in miracles.
34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn’t do.
35. Whatever doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger.
36. Growing old beats the alternative – dying young.
37. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable.
38. Read the Psalms. They cover every human emotion.
39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere.
40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.
41. Don’t audit life. Show up and make the most of it now.
42. Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
43. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved.
44. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
45. The best is yet to come.
46. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
47. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind.
48. If you don’t ask, you don’t get.
49. Yield.
50. Life isn’t tied with a bow, but it’s still a gift.

I found them totally priceless and hope you too did!

Nugget # 10 Life is not a race!

Life is not a race, do take it slower ….

This week I’d like to share a poem written by a terminally ill teenager in a New York hospital:

I think it says it all…we may have the most valuable lesson of life to learn from him….

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down, don’t dance so fast.

Time is short, the music won’t last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?

When you ask, “How are you” Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores running through your head?

You’d better slow down, don’t dance so fast.

Time is short, the music won’t last.

Ever told your child, we’ll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch; let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time to call & say, “Hi”

You’d better slow down. Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short, the music won’t last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere

You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,

It is like an unopened gift….thrown away.

Life is not a race. Do take it slower

Hear the music, before the song is over.

NUGGET OF LIFE:  Enjoy the Dance of Life while the Music lasts!

Nugget # 6 Life is a great big Canvas…

“Life is a great big Canvas, and you should throw all the paint you can on it.” ~ Danny Kaye

Throw all the paint you can!

Just like an artist uses color to make his painting beautiful, on the canvas of our life, we should throw all the beautiful colors that we can to make our lives as colorful as possible!

While thinking of something new to share from this quote, I came up with COLOURS

Many times in our conversation we use color to express our emotions e.g. red with rage, green with envy, a grey day, feeling blue, etc. Just for the fun of it, I’ve listed 10 common colors and some positive attributes associated with them:

1) RED -DETERMINATION, COURAGE, SPEED, BOLDNESS, EXCITEMENT

2) ORANGE- CHEERFULNESS, CREATIVITY, WARMTH, ENTHUSIASM & ENDURANCE

3) YELLOW-ENERGY, HOPE, JOY, OPTIMISM, IMAGINATION

4) GREEN- HEALTH, RENEWAL, GROWTH, YOUTH, GENEROSITY

5) BLUE- CALMNESS, FRESHNESS, UNITY, ORDER, LOYALTY

6) PURPLE- ROYALTY, NOBILITY, SPIRITUALITY, WEALTH, WISDOM

7) BROWN- HUMILITY, STABILITY, RELIABILITY, CASUALNESS, SIMPLICITY

8) BLACK- POWER, FORMALITY, SOPHISTICATION, STYLE, MYSTERY

9) GREY-SECURITY, INTELLIGENCE, DIGNITY, MODESTY, MATURITY

10) WHITE- PEACE, PURITY, GOODNESS, REVERENCE, INNOCENCE

Let us then throw all these colors of positive qualities onto the blank canvas of our life, so that at the end of it, we will have a beautiful painting.  Happy Painting!

NUGGET OF LIFE: Devote yourself to making the Canvas of your life YOUR ULTIMATE MASTERPIECE, for unlike the Artist who can make another one in case he messes up his first, yours is a ONE – TIMER!

Nugget # 5 LIFE IS A MAZE OF PASSAGES

Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free & unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now & again checked in a blind alley. But always, if we have faith, God will open a door for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us.”-A J Cronin

As we stand at the doorway to enter the maze of life, we wish that it was simpler- maybe a straight and easy corridor…with no twists and turns and so no bumps and burns! However, the truth is that life is a maze of passages that take us to totally unexpected & unforeseen places. Many times, it is the “unknown” that fills us with anxiety about the journey ahead. With no guarantee that we will never lose our way/bump into a wall,we gather up our courage, set foot in the maze and start our journey. Abruptly, we find ourselves at a dead end. Disappointed & angry, we shed a few tears. But determined to make it, we get up and keep trying, carefully avoiding our previous mistakes. The path that we select may not be the right one but as long as we keep moving, we find ourselves less confused and more confident. As we reach closer to our destination, we find ourselves strangely amused by the challenging turnings, ironically enjoying the journey we initially dreaded! We keep moving on and suddenly reach a door. Curiously, we turn the door knob, startled; we find a shortcut that takes us straight to our destination. We realize ruefully that the journey is over!

Once again at the doorway, this time at the EXIT, we look back gratefully and realize that it was for a purpose that the maze was not a boring, straight and easy corridor. For it was this complicated, confusing and challenging maze of passages that tested and revealed to us- an inner strength and hidden potential lying dormant that we would otherwise never have known.

We reach home transformed, thanks to that complicated maze of passages!

NUGGET OF LIFE:  LIFE’S DIFFICULTIES ARE NOT TO BREAK US, BUT TO MAKE US.

LET US THUS FAIL OUR WAY TO SUCCESS!
