Nugget# 114 Life lesson from Boman Irani!

images (4)

Hi friends,

Hope you are fine. This week I’d like to share with you some thoughts inspired by a You tube  video I just received. The video tells us about the real life story of the Award winning Boman Irani, who also happens to be one of my favorite actors ! 🙂

Boman  Irani is widely known by us for his comedic and villain roles in bollywood films such as Don, Munnabhai MBBS, 3 Idiots,Happy New Year, PK  etc. In this post, I’d like to share with you the struggles he had to face and overcome to become the person that he is today!

As a child, Boman was shy & dyslexic. He also had a speech defect and lisp till Grade 10.He was called ‘Boman the duffer’ and made fun of during his school life. After training, he decided to become the best waiter he could and worked at Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai. His grandma had taught him that even if he was a cobbler in the street,he should be the best one that he could. His hardwork and tenacity paid off and he gradually got promoted to the post of waiter at the rooftop French restaurant Rendezvous.

He was born posthumously and his mother was in charge of the family business. One day, however, his mother met with an accident and he was forced to take over. For the next 14 years, he made his living by selling chips, wafers and other snacks in their small roadside shop.

While working at Taj , he had bought a camera and took sports pictures and sold them. This continued  till he turned 32 when he had his epiphany & he decided to learn photography so that he could give his family a better life. He decided to be different from the crowd and to never allow small thinking to get in his way again. His mantra in life is ” Do not do what everybody else does, do it differently.” He went on to have a very successful  career in photography & became the official photographer for the World cup of Boxing in India.

However it was at the age of  43 , that he got his big break in the movie industry through Shaimak Davar( an Indian choreographer) who visited him and said ” Trust me, you’re going to be very famous one day.”Shaimak  then introduced him to the world of Bollywood. The rest is history & there has been no turning back for Boman from that moment on. 🙂

Nugget# 96 Life lesson from SUE THOMAS: F.B.Eye!

08

Sue(Deanne) with Levi (Jesse)…Notice his ID!! 🙂

Hi Friends,

Firstly, let me apologize for not being around for a while. Hope you’ve been doing great. At my end, I’ve been going through some fine learning experiences here in the University of Life. Nobody really prefers to enroll at the School of Life’s Hard Knocks and this post is especially dedicated to all those of us who have graduated from there! 🙂

img20021188527hi

The real Sue Thomas F.B.I. with her hearing dog Grace!

I’ve recently been enjoying watching the famous Sue ThomasF.B.Eye,a critically acclaimed groundbreaking TV series inspired by the true story of Sue Thomas, who although profoundly deaf from the age of 18 months, overcame significant obstacles to work surveillance for the F.B.I. Incidentally, Deanne Bray, who plays the role of Sue is herself a severely deaf actress who was also strongly encouraged by her parents to speak and read lips.

As portrayed in the series, Sue Thomas is about to start her first real job – which happens to be with the F.B.I. Though initially underestimated, very soon she is recognized for her intelligence and unique lip reading skills and she lives her hard earned dream when she along with her adorable hearing dog Levi join the bureau’s elite surveillance team.

The awesome team from (Left-Right)  Dimitri,Tara,Bobby,Lucy,Myles,Levi,Sue & Jack

Joining Sue, Levi and Jack on the team are Bobby Manning, a charismatic agent who likes to bend the rules; Dimitrius Gans, the senior member of the surveillance unit; Lucy Dotson, the team’s right hand support person and Sue’s best friend & roommate ; Myles Leland III, the Boston born, Harvard educated, self-proclaimed ‘Einstein with a gun;’ and Tara Williams, the quirky but brilliant go-to tech expert.

This is a show about courage & perseverance, it not only keeps us on the edge of our seat, but also makes us laugh & cry. Though there are many lessons that one could learn from this delightful series (a real breath of fresh air in the highly contaminated & toxic atmosphere of TV entertainment today), the one that I would like to share is IDENTITY.

When we split up the word Identity, we come up with ‘I’  & ‘dent.’ The pronoun ‘I’ refers to the real us without any apology, compromise or mask ; it refers to the basic core of who we really are,our strengths and weaknesses just as they are.

The other part dent refers to 1) a notch or hollow made by a blow or pressure. 2) An impression or effect made usually against resistance.

Like I said in the beginning, we are all dented by life. To succeed, we need to grab life by the horns anyway with absolutely no excuses and seek to live out our dreams boldly and courageously no matter what the odds or obstacles. In the story, Sue cannot hear and even speaks with a lisp. But she uses what she has which is her unique lip reading skills that she has worked on since her childhood. Her mother has been her guiding force always reminding her that in spite of her disability, she could be everything she wanted to as long as she worked twice as hard. She skates, sings and plays the piano as well. If she was like any other person, I doubt she would have inspired us as much. It is her ‘Dent’ that makes her so beautiful and compassionate. She knows what it is to be unwanted, to be the odd one out. And that is what causes her to select Levi in spite of the abuse that he had been through. She in a way empowers him and he ends up saving her life!

It is when we fully accept the ‘I’ in Identity, which includes the good, bad and the ugly (dents & all)…. both in ourselves as well as in others , That is the divine moment when we have ceased to simply exist and truly live our life to its fullest!animated-flower-image-0091 Click for the  WHO I AM song with favorite sneak peeks from the Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye …Enjoy!

Nugget # 87 Life is a Process!

1Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share the importance of understanding one word and that is “PROCESS”. For the people of today’s generation, the word may be quite familiar with food processors which speed up our cooking , however the nugget I’d like to share talks about process in the opposite sense. Let me explain this with the help of an easily understood illustration. Consider a woman who just finds out she is pregnant, she is overjoyed and shares the good news with her loved ones. Some moments of pure bliss but as days and weeks go by, there comes the nausea and the tiredness and the vomiting and the aches and pains and suddenly it doesn’t all seem so much fun. So what does she do? Well, there is nothing else she can do but continue and let the process go on. As long as she goes on doing what she has to do, eating right, exercising right, taking her supplements and going for her regular check ups, the baby in her will grow healthier and then after her wait of 9 months, will come her moment of joy when she can finally hold the newborn baby in her hands.

The time and the sacrifices and the pain she undergoes will only make her baby more precious to her. The same thing applies to us in our life. All of us have to go through different processes in life and just like the lady, not every stage may be desirable, we need to stick with it and go through each stage with full cooperation in order to reach where we want to or get what we want. Some of us may have a dream that may seem in no way attainable as of today but if we consistently work towards smaller goals in that direction we will in the long run after having overcome many milestones, finally be able to reach where we once dreamt of reaching.

Friend, what is it that you would like to do or become in your wildest dream? Remember, you need to go through the process, every day should draw you nearer to your dream. Even when you feel like you haven’t achieved much , consistently keep trying to do more each day and one day you will find yourself living your dream.

Nugget # 85 Life lesson from a Green Mango!

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share an inspirational message that struck me while I was in the kitchen today. As I scrutinized my Veggie compartment I came across 2 green mangoes. Thinking them to be raw, I picked them up and a drumstick thinking of making a mango and drumstick curry. After all the green mangoes looked not very promising and were not tender too.But surprise surprise, as I peeled one mango I saw a deep orange colour and that made me taste it. Would you believe it was one of the sweetest and most delicious mangoes I have ever tasted! Forget the curry, they are definitely gonna be dessert!;)

That set me thinking…. Isn’t this very much applicable to our lives as well? Very often life gives us chances or an opportunity which on the outward appearance doesn’t really look anything like what we would like to have and so we grudgingly go ahead and try to see what we can do just out of compulsion. But the truth is that when we actually begin to look at it closely and with patient and positive eyes, we will be able to find seeds of that which we have all along wanted or maybe even something better than that.

Those mangoes reminded me that we must be super slow to label /compartmentalize and quit being prejudiced or judgemental. And instead to be more welcoming and optimistic of every little thing or every single person that crosses our life. By keeping an open mind, who knows what we may actually learn?

Nugget # 82 Life lesson from a crying School boy!

78457245Hi friends,

Today as I helped my son get on his school bus, I watched an older child kicking and screaming and refusing to get on the bus. His mother and the bus helper tried to get him on and finally the driver had to help in getting the child on. Later we understood that the child was reluctant to go to school after his 1 whole week of vacation. This incident set me thinking and inspired me to write this nugget.

How very like that crying school boy we are when it comes to things that we know we should do but don’t feel like doing. Be it exercise/healthy living /work place issues or even relationships often we feel reluctant like that little boy and in our minds we kick and scream at even the idea of facing issues we don’t like to confront and would rather stay back home(in our comfort zone) Just as no good parent would allow this to happen so also we must discipline our flesh from time to time by doing what is good for us  rather than what we feel like.

Just sharing some points that may help us in the transition of doing the right thing when we do not feel like it.

1)Write out the things that need to be done and tick them off as you go ahead.

2) Just focus on the next step. One thing at a time.

3)Think about the confusion that may arise by not doing the thing.

4)Accept that it is difficult but essential. Sometimes promising ourselves a reward can give us the necessary push to go ahead.

5)Brainstorm with others (friends or loved ones) about how they handle similar issues.

6)Mentally prepare ourselves  for the ordeal by reminding ourselves that we have to face the situation and there is no way out.

7)Train ourselves to think of solutions instead of excuses.

8)Last but not least, picture yourself smiling happily after having succeeded.

Be it small or large a task, the same set of principles can help us face that which we would rather avoid or procrastinate. Consistency is key as we continue to repeatedly conquer our mountains we will thus develop the attitude of a conqueror and will start to cherish such challenges.

Have an adventurous week!

Nugget # 79 Life is like a Garden!

15083-desktop-wallpapers-sunken-garden
“Life is like a garden. You reap what you sow. From your own fertile soil your seedlings do grow.”

Hi friends,

It’s been a long while since I have sat down and penned something and so it is with great joy that I share with you something that came to mind this morning. Hope it speaks something to you.

Each of our lives is like a garden that has been entrusted to our care. Meaning each of us is the Gardener to the garden of our life.

1)  Unique : No two plots or pieces of land are identical. Whatever we have; our families, our time, our talents, our friends, our relatives, our homes are where we cultivate our garden. We need to love and accept what we have been given and make the most beautiful garden out of it.

2) Free Choice : We are all given freedom to grow whatever we want in our garden. We can grow flowers or ornamental plants or fruits or vegetables or we may just leave it as it is. The choice is ours.

3) Investment Required: Once we have made our choice, we will have to invest into the garden. We need to give it time, energy, money in order to purchase the necessary tools, fertilizer, seed, etc. Some amount of sacrifice may be required if we want to do something worthwhile in life.

4) Ploughing the land : This means we actually dig out the hard soil of our garden and thus make it softer and ready to receive the seed we plan to sow. This refers to the teachability of the soil of our hearts to receive.

5) Uprooting the weeds: There may already be many weeds and other outgrowth that may spoil the garden and choke the good seed and so we will need to pluck out all of them to ensure a healthy environment for the proper growth of the plants we want to grow. This refers to the uprooting of our wrong mindsets and attitudes many which have grown strong roots as they have been there for a long time. This process may be time consuming, tiring and often even painful but it is inevitable if we want to have a beautiful garden.

6) Sowing good seed: The seed that we sow refers to the thoughts we meditate on , the words we speak and the actions we perform. If we speak life( positive, uplifting, encouraging words), we will sow life. Speaking death(negative words ,critical attitudes towards ourselves or others) will cause us to reap death.

7) Commitment to stick: Often on reaching this stage we may feel that our job is done. As actually we have completed the doing, we may get impatient to see the desired result but we are forced to wait patiently as digging up the soil is only going to destroy our hard work. This is a crucial time when we need to commit to stay till we get the desired result. Many times thinking that what we have been doing has not yielded results we may be tempted to give up our efforts to maintain what we have started. Just like we need to continue watering the garden and  giving it the necessary fertilizer and believing that one day we will see the result of our hard work, there are many times in life when we may have to just stay faithfully continuing what we know we have to do whether we feel like it or not.

8) Irrelevancy of Comparison: As mentioned in the 1st point each plot of land given was unique and the choices that we made were ours, the work we put into it, the seed we sowed were all different, then how can we compare our garden with another’s? Often times we may look over the fence and see our neighbours’ garden in full bloom while all we see in ours is brown patches of earth. We may then be envious or we may call them lucky, we may even feel our efforts fruitless and the waiting may suddenly seem longer but then we need to remember that they may have started long before us, they may have worked harder, their choice of crop may be different from ours and so in reality the comparison is really not at all relevant. Instead let us  enjoy the beauty of their garden and taste the sweetness of their fruit all the while believing that one day our garden too will be beautiful and then they too will rejoice with us.

animated-smileys-garden-007Nugget of Life: Your life is your garden and you are the gardener. Make sure you make the most beautiful garden that you can while you are here on earth. Surely, one day someone may stop by just to tell you how they admire the work of your hands!

Have a beautiful week!

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie

Nugget # 76 Life lesson from the movie ENGLISH VINGLISH!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a very valuable life lesson I learnt from the recently released Bollywood film English Vinglish. A feel good movie for people of all ages. You can read the story line and review here.

Click here for Title Song: http://youtu.be/jqxF6MT4sZo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqxF6MT4sZo

The lesson I learnt from Shashi (Sridevi) is the importance of Self respect. It’s admirable how this selfless wife and mother finally makes a decision to do something for herself (learn English) after being put down repeatedly by her husband and teenage daughter for not being able to speak English. She capitalizes on an opportunity that comes her way, by believing in herself and secretly working very hard. She finally surprises everyone with a Speech (about marriage and relationships) in perfect English and thus earns for herself the much deserved respect of all she knows; something that she had always yearned for.

In today’s highly competitive world, genuine appreciation/ encouragement and pats on the back never come easy and so in order to be truly happy, we need to learn how to be our own best friend first. It is when we love and respect ourselves that we can get ahead in life. And the way we treat ourselves often sets the standard for others to treat us.

Self-respect cannot be hunted. It cannot be purchased. It is never for sale. It cannot be fabricated out of public relations. It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth we have spoken it. ~Whitney Griswold
