Nugget# 96 Life lesson from SUE THOMAS: F.B.Eye!

08

Sue(Deanne) with Levi (Jesse)…Notice his ID!! 🙂

Hi Friends,

Firstly, let me apologize for not being around for a while. Hope you’ve been doing great. At my end, I’ve been going through some fine learning experiences here in the University of Life. Nobody really prefers to enroll at the School of Life’s Hard Knocks and this post is especially dedicated to all those of us who have graduated from there! 🙂

img20021188527hi

The real Sue Thomas F.B.I. with her hearing dog Grace!

I’ve recently been enjoying watching the famous Sue ThomasF.B.Eye,a critically acclaimed groundbreaking TV series inspired by the true story of Sue Thomas, who although profoundly deaf from the age of 18 months, overcame significant obstacles to work surveillance for the F.B.I. Incidentally, Deanne Bray, who plays the role of Sue is herself a severely deaf actress who was also strongly encouraged by her parents to speak and read lips.

As portrayed in the series, Sue Thomas is about to start her first real job – which happens to be with the F.B.I. Though initially underestimated, very soon she is recognized for her intelligence and unique lip reading skills and she lives her hard earned dream when she along with her adorable hearing dog Levi join the bureau’s elite surveillance team.

78849-1

The awesome team from (Left-Right)  Dimitri,Tara,Bobby,Lucy,Myles,Levi,Sue & Jack

Joining Sue, Levi and Jack on the team are Bobby Manning, a charismatic agent who likes to bend the rules; Dimitrius Gans, the senior member of the surveillance unit; Lucy Dotson, the team’s right hand support person and Sue’s best friend & roommate ; Myles Leland III, the Boston born, Harvard educated, self-proclaimed ‘Einstein with a gun;’ and Tara Williams, the quirky but brilliant go-to tech expert.

This is a show about courage & perseverance, it not only keeps us on the edge of our seat, but also makes us laugh & cry. Though there are many lessons that one could learn from this delightful series (a real breath of fresh air in the highly contaminated & toxic atmosphere of TV entertainment today), the one that I would like to share is IDENTITY.

When we split up the word Identity, we come up with ‘I’  & ‘dent.’ The pronoun ‘I’ refers to the real us without any apology, compromise or mask ; it refers to the basic core of who we really are,our strengths and weaknesses just as they are.

The other part dent refers to 1) a notch or hollow made by a blow or pressure. 2) An impression or effect made usually against resistance.

Like I said in the beginning, we are all dented by life. To succeed, we need to grab life by the horns anyway with absolutely no excuses and seek to live out our dreams boldly and courageously no matter what the odds or obstacles. In the story, Sue cannot hear and even speaks with a lisp. But she uses what she has which is her unique lip reading skills that she has worked on since her childhood. Her mother has been her guiding force always reminding her that in spite of her disability, she could be everything she wanted to as long as she worked twice as hard. She skates, sings and plays the piano as well. If she was like any other person, I doubt she would have inspired us as much. It is her ‘Dent’ that makes her so beautiful and compassionate. She knows what it is to be unwanted, to be the odd one out. And that is what causes her to select Levi in spite of the abuse that he had been through. She in a way empowers him and he ends up saving her life!

It is when we fully accept the ‘I’ in Identity, which includes the good, bad and the ugly (dents & all)…. both in ourselves as well as in others , That is the divine moment when we have ceased to simply exist and truly live our life to its fullest!animated-flower-image-0091 Click for the  WHO I AM song with favorite sneak peeks from the Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye …Enjoy!

Nugget # 92 Life lesson from a Pair of Jeans!

6559417-pair-of-jeans-isolated-on-the-white-backgroundHi friends,

First things first…Wishing you all a wonderfully happy New Year! This week I’d like to share a random thought that came to mind as I was ironing a pair of jeans. I just started wondering….when, where and how did jeans ever originate? With a little help from Google, I got the story which inspires me to write today’s nugget.

In 1853, the California gold rush was in full swing, and everyday items were in short supply. Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant, left New York for San Francisco with a small supply of dry goods with the intention of opening a branch of his brother’s New York dry goods business. Shortly after his arrival, a prospector wanted to know what Mr. Levi Strauss was selling. When Strauss told him he had rough canvas to use for tents and wagon covers, the prospector said, “You should have brought pants!,” saying he couldn’t find a pair of pants strong enough to last. Levi Strauss had the canvas made into waist overalls. Miners liked the pants, but complained that they tended to chafe. Levi Strauss substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France called “serge de Nimes.” The fabric later became known as denim and the pants were nicknamed blue jeans after the sailors from Genoa in Italy who first wore them.

One of Levi’s customers was a Reno Nevada- based Latvian tailor by the name of Jacob Davis. He regularly purchased bolts of cloth from the wholesale house of Levi Strauss & Co. Among Jacob’s customers was a difficult man who kept ripping the pockets of the pants that Jacob made for him. Jacob tried to think of a way to strengthen the man’s trousers, and one day hit upon the idea of putting metal rivets at the points of strain. These riveted pants were an instant hit with Jacob’s customers and he along with Levi Strauss co patented the process of putting rivets in pants for strength. On May 20, 1873, they received  US patent no.139,121. That day is now considered to be the official “birthday” of blue jeans.

We can see that what started out as “unwanted” canvas was transformed little by little into “much in demand” pants that is today a staple of everybody’s wardrobe and even a key element in seasonal trends and fashion around the world.

The same thing is applicable to our lives. Very few of us get things on golden platters. For the majority of us, as we surge ahead and face obstacles in life, it is going to be our ability to see the hidden opportunity instead of the glaring impossibility that will actually determine our success. In other words, the trick is not to avoid all mistakes but to see how we can make our mistakes work for us.

Have an awesome week!

Nugget # 86 Life lesson from the movie “YES MAN”

3CF_Yes-Man-Jim-CarreyHi friends,

This week I’d like to share a real life enricher that I came across while I watched the movie ‘YES Man’ (starring Jim Carrey) roughly based on the book “YES MAN” by Danny Wallace. The story is about a bank loan officer Carl Allen who leads his life with a totally negative outlook and says ‘NO’ to practically everything in his life. The turning point comes when an old colleague of his introduces him to a ‘YES’ Seminar and he now has to say ‘YES’ to everything in his life. With no other option, he goes ahead and starts saying ‘YES’ and thus begins to live his life to the fullest by experiencing things in his life that he would otherwise never have known.

Here is the link to the movie trailer : http://youtu.be/uRv4CoXQoAQ

Now the question is “What if we began to say YES to every opportunity that came up in our life? Of course, being realistic and keeping a balance is also important (which is mentioned in the movie too). But what if we stopped procrastinating by thinking ourselves out of things and instead started saying YES to more in our life? Personally, I noticed that many times when called to do things out of the normal routine, even though I know I should do it, my perfectionistic tendency either made me postpone the thing or altogether drop the idea after toying with it for some time. However, when I started giving myself no other option but a ‘YES’, I began to find joy in accomplishing EXTRA things by embracing the invitations of life. In the long run, this in turn enables us to actually grow beyond what we can think or imagine. It is allowing ourselves to be in alignment with all the good things that God wants for us. That definitely makes life more adventurous and challenging! Isn’t that what living life to its fullest is all about?

“Find a way to say yes to things. Say yes to invitations to a new country, say yes to meet new friends, say yes to learn something new. Yes is how you get your first job, and your next job, and your spouse, and even your kids. Even if it’s a bit edgy, a bit out of your comfort zone, saying yes means that you will do something new, meet someone new, and make a difference. Yes lets you stand out in a crowd, be the optimist, see the glass full, be the one everyone comes to. Yes is what keeps us all young.”- Eric Schmidt

Nugget of Life: SAY YES TO LIFE!

“When spring knocks at your door, regardless of the time of year or season of our lives, run, do not walk to that door, throw it open with wild abandon, and say, “Yes! Yes, come in! Do me, and do me big!” –Jeffrey R Anderson

Have an adventurous week!

Nugget # 73 Life is like a Piano!

“[The piano is] able to communicate the subtlest universal truths by means of wood, metal and vibrating air.”- Kenneth Miller

Hi friends,

Often in life when we look around us we may feel that many have got only the white keys(happy moments) and no black keys(sad moments). However if we really got to know them, we would realize that everybody has got their own fair share of both black and white keys. It’s how we make use of what we have that makes all the difference.

“One man gets nothing but discord out of a piano; another gets harmony. No one claims the piano is at fault. Life is about the same. The discord is there, and the harmony is there. Study to play it correctly, and it will give forth the beauty; play it falsely, and it will give forth the ugliness. Life is not at fault.”- Author Unknown

Nugget # 63 Life lesson from a Hot Air Balloon!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a life lesson from a hot air balloon.

The mechanism of the hot air balloon is pretty simple; it works on the principle that since hot air is lighter than cold air, when the air inside the balloon is heated up, it causes the balloon to rise and when the air inside the balloon is cooled it causes the balloon to sink. In this manner the air pilot can maneuver the balloon and the people can enjoy their ride.

The hot air balloons before the modern period used to have sandbags (see pic) to weigh them down until lift off and after that the sand was gradually dumped for the balloon to gain height in the air. The same thing is applicable in human life also.

Often in order to rise high in life we may have to cut off heavy weights that keep us down. These may be in the form of bad habits like laziness /being short tempered / sloppiness or having the wrong kind of friends, sometimes even memories of past failures. As long as they weigh us down, we will never be able to rise to heights in life. Just like the sand bags are dumped before the take off  by cutting the ropes attached to them, we too must sever all those things that hold us back from being able to ride high and being all that we want to be in life.

Nugget of Life: Let go of the things that weigh you down so that there will then be enough room in your life to welcome the things that could lift you up.

Have a terrific week.

Nugget # 42 Life is like hair-styling!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share with you the story of an old woman whose attitude made all the difference!

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “Hmmm..,” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.” So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “YAY!” she exclaimed. “I don’t have to fix my hair today!”

-Author Unknown but greatly appreciated

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”- Charles R Swindoll

Nugget # 34 Life lessons from an Air-freshener!

Hi friends,

If I were to ask you to name a bathroom accessory universally found in every household ,chances are you will say soap/shampoo and yet there is one very important and yet often ignored toiletry in each of our homes ; THE AIR FRESHENER. It comes in different sizes, colors, fragrances,designs/ types and yet its basic features & function always remains the same. This week, I’d like to share with you 6 life-changing lessons from the air freshener. Reading this post, will give you a new respect for your much ignored air freshener. Trust me; you will never look at it with the same eyes ever again! 😉

1)The Air freshener is SELFLESS : It spreads fragrance where it is needed irrespective of whether/not it is responsible for the staleness/mustiness/bad odor. Often in life we may not be the cause for the “staleness” around us but we still can take responsibility to fight it by doing the good we can in our own small way. Oh! to be like that SELFLESS Air freshener which does its job anyway!

“This is what sets the tiny opal of a planet off from a million greater worlds – the possibility of KINDNESS- the possibility of CARE.”- Pam Brown

2)The Air freshener is FAITHFUL:  It takes only one/ two sprays to transform the atmosphere of a room. Often in life, we may wonder what good will come out of our small/insignificant acts of goodness. Truth is, we will never know; the power of a smile/a kind word/ a genuine compliment/a gift to someone in need /a listening ear/ a helping hand may even be the difference between life and death! Never underestimate your POWER to bring joy into another’s life.

“If you think you are too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito!”-Anita Roddick 😉

3)The Air Freshener is often INVISIBLE:  Do any of us pay attention to the air freshener unless it is actually needed? Many of our lives are just like that. We may be invisible to the world repeatedly doing our everyday duties faithfully and doing good to those around.Even when we do, the response we get may not be what we expect. Sometimes we may even be misunderstood/accused of selfish motives and disillusioned,we may even ask ourselves “Why did I even bother?” But the truth is that no good deed is ever wasted just like the seed which germinates all of a sudden, results will come when least expected.Let us never allow the reactions of others from stopping us doing the good we believe we need to do.

“It’s not what you do once in a while, it’s what you do day in and day out that makes the difference.”- Jenny Craig

4)The Air Freshener is FILLED:  As long as the Air freshener is full, the effect of the spray will always be there. Before it is emptied, it needs to get refilled or else it will be useless and thrown into the trash-can, no matter how useful it has been in the past. The same thing applies to us, we need to take good care of ourselves & always be in balance; getting the right rest/ nourishment/ strength/education/entertainment/encouragement we need. We can give to another only when we have enough and hence need to be kind to ourselves too. This may require us to prioritize / even say NO to some things in life. Somebody once called it “being SELFLESSLY SELFISH”. Well, if that is what we have to be,so be it. I think it’s always better to take time & recharge rather than to break down & recharge! 😉

“Guard within yourself that treasure, KINDNESS. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness.”- George Sand

5)The Air Freshener is an OPPORTUNIST:  Had the Air Freshener a choice of its sphere of influence, I’m sure it would never choose the musty/stinky places. Figuratively speaking, many of us are just like that air freshener and may be placed in situations we would rather choose not to be,but let us decide today that instead of using up our energy in fighting our circumstances and wishing things were different, let’s just makes the best of exactly what we have and where we have been placed.

“The best place to succeed is where you are, with what you have.”-Charles M Schwab

6)The Air freshener is an OPTIMIST: If the Air freshener were not an ideal optimist, I think, it would have given up on us a long time back. I mean, what does it get in return for every spray of freshness it gives out into the world? It is just used and then ignored until it is needed again but the Air freshener never gives up and slowly the room gets fresher and fresher. Similarly, we need to believe the best about ourselves and the people in our life and treat them as if they already were what they ought to be and thus help them in becoming better!

“Trust people and they will be true to you; treat them greatly and they will show themselves great.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love this quote by the character Claire Colburn, from the must-see movie ELIZABETH TOWN.

Click to watch this cute cartoon song: LET’S MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE http://youtu.be/OuJMl5ZmKc0 OR  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuJMl5ZmKc0

“Never if possible lie down at night without being able to say: I have made one more human being at least a little wiser or a little happier or a little better this day.”- Charles Kingsley.

“If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.”-Emily Dickinson

“If at the end, all that can be said of you is that you were kind, it is enough.”- Peter Gray B

Nugget of Life: “Happiness is like a perfume, you cannot give it away without getting a few drops on yourself!”-Author Unknown but greatly appreciated!

Nugget # 22 Life is like a blanket!

“Life is like a blanket too short. You pull it up and your toes rebel, you yank it down and shivers meander about your shoulder ; but cheerful folks manage to draw their knees up and pass a very comfortable night.”~Marion Howard

This week I’d like to share with you a lesson I learnt from the above humorous quote which brought a smile to my face and I hope to yours too ! 😉

Every one of us (whether young/old, tall/short, big/small, fat/thin) is provided with a custom-designed blanket which is made “too short”- [on purpose] just for us. This blanket is given to us to keep us warm from the cold of the night. If we pull it up, our toes will be cold, if we pull it down, our shoulders shiver. No matter which way we pull it up or pull it down, try to stretch it to its limit, nothing changes. Some of us may due to frustration just throw the blanket on the floor in anger but that only makes us colder and robs us of our sleep. We slowly learn that if we bend and draw up our knees, we can actually fully cover ourselves and thus sleep cozily cuddled under the very same blanket.

In life too there may be many things that we may not like or agree with but instead of fighting it and thus losing our joy, it is wiser to be flexible and accept gratefully that which comes to us and make the best of it. We thus will be able to pass the night comfortably ; enjoy our life to the fullest!

Nugget of Life: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot   change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Reinhold Niebhur

Good night, Sweet Dreams & Sleep tight!  Have a great week!

Nugget # 17 Life is like a flowing river

Life stands with all she has, her arms open wide welcoming us,  “Come and take as much as you want.”. It is Life’s great tragedy that inspite of her generous invitation,we never listen and seize as much as we can when she beckons to us and yet unfulfilled and dissatisfied, we always fill her ears with complaints when the chance is gone! Whose fault is it actually ? Enjoy this beautiful poem which gives us the same message!

I bargained with Life for a penny  –  by Jessie B Rittenhouse

I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.

For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.

Nugget # 16 Life Lessons from Blogging

Hi there, this week’s blogpost is about the lessons of life learnt from Blogging. When we really think about it, there is really not much difference between LIFE and BLOGGING! After all,the Blogosphere is a miniature world comprising of all kinds of people you would find in LIFE!

Initially, I thought of drawing from the experiences of other bloggers but have realised that truly there are too many lessons I myself have to share. So just sharing some of them and also those of you early birdies who have been kind enough to share, the rest of you are welcome to share your lessons as comments, everyone of you is valuable to me.Ok here goes:

1) The whole reason why we blog can be summed up in this lovely phrase I got from Lorna’s Voice About Me column that caught my eye and has not left me since. We are all here saying the same thing:“I’m like everyone you have ever met and like no one you will ever meet.”-We want to fit in and we also want to stand out!

LIFE LESSON: It takes strength to fit in and courage to stand out!

2) Every New Post is like a New Day : Every time we write a new post, there is a thrill,an anticipation just like the promise of a new day!

LIFE LESSON: A New Day is a New Beginning!

3)Not everyone is going to get what you are saying all the time, neither are you going to get what they are saying all the time but always make sure to let them know when you do! –   I mean, let’s admit it, is there any person in our life that we understand 100% of the time ?

LIFE LESSON:  Don’t expect people to understand you all the time and be happy when someone does!Similarly, let others know when you understand them!

4)It’s not always about the hits! :  Does it really matter how many hits you get?I mean consider you have the greatest statistics in all of History and make it to Number 1 position…then what? The same thing applies in LIFE too, you get it all- MONEY, NAME, FAME, RECOGNITION but is that all? I think we need to “grow up” and  think deeper and look around and see not only how we can grow but how we can also help another on the way.I hate to say this but I feel compelled to : Many of the Newbies in WP Forums are snubbed/criticised everytime they introduce themselves instead of being encouraged and guided as to how to improve as they set  baby steps into this complicated new world of blogging. Aren’t we here because someone helped us get here? And as the quote goes:”If you don’t have something good to say,why bother at all?”

LIFE LESSON: The more fruits a tree bears, the more it bends down! When we get FRUITS,let us not forget our ROOTS!

 5) Looking beyond the words: Call me simple/ intuitive/naive ,call me what you like…but I see the people behind the words.I ask the question:Is this person trying to encourage/ educate/entertain/help/be brave/ just be honest? These are the bloggers who I am drawn to. Sometimes we don’t get everything said but we get the spirit of what is being said and it makes us feel “I’ve been there too”,or I can relate to that” or ” I admire this honesty” or “your words bring much loved but forgotten memories” and that makes us feel like  responding to a post…DO WE READ WITH OUR HEADS ALONE OR ALSO WITH OUR HEARTS? The bloggers I am drawn to are bloggers who are not only intelligent and witty, creative and fun but also people who care.Out of the many,to mention a few and why they are so: Lafemmeroar (An Initiator who is not only fun but also an encourager), Marcia (a talented and versatile blogger who has a very refined way of speaking and a generous heart!),Shonnie (whose amazing honesty and openness as well as positivity is simply contagious),Jennifer (who is a versatile blogger with an amazing blog about her travel accounts),Nina (who draws pictures with her words but sadly hasn’t been around much!).Some of them are not my subscribers and some I dont subscribe to but they still are my favs for who they are! Let us subscribe to another person because we want to and not because we have to.Let us be able to commend a person for a well written post even if we don’t subscribe …;)

LIFE LESSON: The ones we will always remember are those who went the extra mile- who shared not only their ideas but also their hearts!

6)For me,every like/comment/subscription is a hand extended in friendship:   It’s because someone has taken the time to read or at least likes something written(in all honesty, some of us truly dont have the luxury of time to scroll down and read every word)but when someone appreciates what we have written,we need to TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS – a well deserved pat on the back! Also when someone makes a suggestion for improvement, take that also with a pinch of salt. The very idea of starting this blog came when a friend of mine told me that my first Blog (Lil Spark in the Dark)was too Christian to his liking! I realised what he was saying and hence started NUGGETS OF LIFE!

LIFE LESSON: Embrace all life gives you and then decide what to do with it!

7)It humbles me when I read great blogs of  high standard ,it encourages me when I read blogs I can relate to and understand and learn from. And it makes me remember the way I have come when I see someone share where I have already been.In life also there will always be people who are more mature and experienced and whom we can learn from, people whom we can share and grow with and people whom we can encourage as they find their way.Life is filled with opportunities to draw inspiration from,to be an inspiration with and to give inspiration to .

LIFE LESSON: Learn from others and share what you learn with others!

It’s been a LONG post ….and I could still go on and on …but to sum things up, this journey of blogging has been Humbling , Hilarious & Heart Warming, Educating ,Entertaining & Enlightening, Informative, Interesting & Inspiring!… I ‘ve enjoyed every minute of it and thanks to all of you Bloggers for making it worthwhile!

Hope you enjoyed this post. Feel free to share positive lessons you may have learnt on your journey blogging:

A Special Thanks to those of you who cared enough to share your LIFE Lessons from Blogging:

Thanks guys, I loved what you shared:

1)  STEWIE

a)Blogging has enabled me to express a creative side that I didn’t know I had in me.

b) I have learnt that there is no point in comparing the success of my blog (by stats) to others that may be completely different in content. Feedback from the readers that I do have and a steady growth are enough. Ultimately, as long as I am happy with what I produce, then that is the most important thing.

2) JENNA :

a)Passion – have passion about what you believe in, even it is writing about it or talking to your best friend
b)Motivation – nothing will never get done if you don’t motivate yourself to do it.
c)Be Yourself – Don’t play around like you are a hard ball in life, be yourself, & be real.
d)Honest – Honesty is the best policy
e)Mood – Don’t beat yourself up if you are in a jam or feeling cranky. Do it when the right mood strikes.
f)Reach – Reach out to others & they will reach out to you

3) SHONNIE:

a) I have learned the great value of community. I know people knock cyberspace connections, but it was much easier for me to write about my journey of weight loss and hold myself accountable — even if no one read it — because for me it felt public. Turns out it was and that is even better. I have a LOT of accountablity partners. there is safety in numbers.

b) You also learn from yourself, about yourself. 🙂

NUGGET OF LIFE:  Attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching?

       Happy Blogging!
