Nugget# 96 Life lesson from SUE THOMAS: F.B.Eye!

08

Sue(Deanne) with Levi (Jesse)…Notice his ID!! 🙂

Hi Friends,

Firstly, let me apologize for not being around for a while. Hope you’ve been doing great. At my end, I’ve been going through some fine learning experiences here in the University of Life. Nobody really prefers to enroll at the School of Life’s Hard Knocks and this post is especially dedicated to all those of us who have graduated from there! 🙂

The real Sue Thomas F.B.I. with her hearing dog Grace!

I’ve recently been enjoying watching the famous Sue ThomasF.B.Eye,a critically acclaimed groundbreaking TV series inspired by the true story of Sue Thomas, who although profoundly deaf from the age of 18 months, overcame significant obstacles to work surveillance for the F.B.I. Incidentally, Deanne Bray, who plays the role of Sue is herself a severely deaf actress who was also strongly encouraged by her parents to speak and read lips.

As portrayed in the series, Sue Thomas is about to start her first real job – which happens to be with the F.B.I. Though initially underestimated, very soon she is recognized for her intelligence and unique lip reading skills and she lives her hard earned dream when she along with her adorable hearing dog Levi join the bureau’s elite surveillance team.

78849-1

The awesome team from (Left-Right)  Dimitri,Tara,Bobby,Lucy,Myles,Levi,Sue & Jack

Joining Sue, Levi and Jack on the team are Bobby Manning, a charismatic agent who likes to bend the rules; Dimitrius Gans, the senior member of the surveillance unit; Lucy Dotson, the team’s right hand support person and Sue’s best friend & roommate ; Myles Leland III, the Boston born, Harvard educated, self-proclaimed ‘Einstein with a gun;’ and Tara Williams, the quirky but brilliant go-to tech expert.

This is a show about courage & perseverance, it not only keeps us on the edge of our seat, but also makes us laugh & cry. Though there are many lessons that one could learn from this delightful series (a real breath of fresh air in the highly contaminated & toxic atmosphere of TV entertainment today), the one that I would like to share is IDENTITY.

When we split up the word Identity, we come up with ‘I’  & ‘dent.’ The pronoun ‘I’ refers to the real us without any apology, compromise or mask ; it refers to the basic core of who we really are,our strengths and weaknesses just as they are.

The other part dent refers to 1) a notch or hollow made by a blow or pressure. 2) An impression or effect made usually against resistance.

Like I said in the beginning, we are all dented by life. To succeed, we need to grab life by the horns anyway with absolutely no excuses and seek to live out our dreams boldly and courageously no matter what the odds or obstacles. In the story, Sue cannot hear and even speaks with a lisp. But she uses what she has which is her unique lip reading skills that she has worked on since her childhood. Her mother has been her guiding force always reminding her that in spite of her disability, she could be everything she wanted to as long as she worked twice as hard. She skates, sings and plays the piano as well. If she was like any other person, I doubt she would have inspired us as much. It is her ‘Dent’ that makes her so beautiful and compassionate. She knows what it is to be unwanted, to be the odd one out. And that is what causes her to select Levi in spite of the abuse that he had been through. She in a way empowers him and he ends up saving her life!

It is when we fully accept the ‘I’ in Identity, which includes the good, bad and the ugly (dents & all)…. both in ourselves as well as in others , That is the divine moment when we have ceased to simply exist and truly live our life to its fullest!animated-flower-image-0091 Click for the  WHO I AM song with favorite sneak peeks from the Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye …Enjoy!

Nugget # 92 Life lesson from a Pair of Jeans!

6559417-pair-of-jeans-isolated-on-the-white-backgroundHi friends,

First things first…Wishing you all a wonderfully happy New Year! This week I’d like to share a random thought that came to mind as I was ironing a pair of jeans. I just started wondering….when, where and how did jeans ever originate? With a little help from Google, I got the story which inspires me to write today’s nugget.

In 1853, the California gold rush was in full swing, and everyday items were in short supply. Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant, left New York for San Francisco with a small supply of dry goods with the intention of opening a branch of his brother’s New York dry goods business. Shortly after his arrival, a prospector wanted to know what Mr. Levi Strauss was selling. When Strauss told him he had rough canvas to use for tents and wagon covers, the prospector said, “You should have brought pants!,” saying he couldn’t find a pair of pants strong enough to last. Levi Strauss had the canvas made into waist overalls. Miners liked the pants, but complained that they tended to chafe. Levi Strauss substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France called “serge de Nimes.” The fabric later became known as denim and the pants were nicknamed blue jeans after the sailors from Genoa in Italy who first wore them.

One of Levi’s customers was a Reno Nevada- based Latvian tailor by the name of Jacob Davis. He regularly purchased bolts of cloth from the wholesale house of Levi Strauss & Co. Among Jacob’s customers was a difficult man who kept ripping the pockets of the pants that Jacob made for him. Jacob tried to think of a way to strengthen the man’s trousers, and one day hit upon the idea of putting metal rivets at the points of strain. These riveted pants were an instant hit with Jacob’s customers and he along with Levi Strauss co patented the process of putting rivets in pants for strength. On May 20, 1873, they received  US patent no.139,121. That day is now considered to be the official “birthday” of blue jeans.

We can see that what started out as “unwanted” canvas was transformed little by little into “much in demand” pants that is today a staple of everybody’s wardrobe and even a key element in seasonal trends and fashion around the world.

The same thing is applicable to our lives. Very few of us get things on golden platters. For the majority of us, as we surge ahead and face obstacles in life, it is going to be our ability to see the hidden opportunity instead of the glaring impossibility that will actually determine our success. In other words, the trick is not to avoid all mistakes but to see how we can make our mistakes work for us.

Have an awesome week!

Nugget # 86 Life lesson from the movie “YES MAN”

3CF_Yes-Man-Jim-CarreyHi friends,

This week I’d like to share a real life enricher that I came across while I watched the movie ‘YES Man’ (starring Jim Carrey) roughly based on the book “YES MAN” by Danny Wallace. The story is about a bank loan officer Carl Allen who leads his life with a totally negative outlook and says ‘NO’ to practically everything in his life. The turning point comes when an old colleague of his introduces him to a ‘YES’ Seminar and he now has to say ‘YES’ to everything in his life. With no other option, he goes ahead and starts saying ‘YES’ and thus begins to live his life to the fullest by experiencing things in his life that he would otherwise never have known.

Here is the link to the movie trailer : http://youtu.be/uRv4CoXQoAQ

Now the question is “What if we began to say YES to every opportunity that came up in our life? Of course, being realistic and keeping a balance is also important (which is mentioned in the movie too). But what if we stopped procrastinating by thinking ourselves out of things and instead started saying YES to more in our life? Personally, I noticed that many times when called to do things out of the normal routine, even though I know I should do it, my perfectionistic tendency either made me postpone the thing or altogether drop the idea after toying with it for some time. However, when I started giving myself no other option but a ‘YES’, I began to find joy in accomplishing EXTRA things by embracing the invitations of life. In the long run, this in turn enables us to actually grow beyond what we can think or imagine. It is allowing ourselves to be in alignment with all the good things that God wants for us. That definitely makes life more adventurous and challenging! Isn’t that what living life to its fullest is all about?

“Find a way to say yes to things. Say yes to invitations to a new country, say yes to meet new friends, say yes to learn something new. Yes is how you get your first job, and your next job, and your spouse, and even your kids. Even if it’s a bit edgy, a bit out of your comfort zone, saying yes means that you will do something new, meet someone new, and make a difference. Yes lets you stand out in a crowd, be the optimist, see the glass full, be the one everyone comes to. Yes is what keeps us all young.”- Eric Schmidt

Nugget of Life: SAY YES TO LIFE!

“When spring knocks at your door, regardless of the time of year or season of our lives, run, do not walk to that door, throw it open with wild abandon, and say, “Yes! Yes, come in! Do me, and do me big!” –Jeffrey R Anderson

Have an adventurous week!

Nugget # 73 Life is like a Piano!

“[The piano is] able to communicate the subtlest universal truths by means of wood, metal and vibrating air.”- Kenneth Miller

Hi friends,

Often in life when we look around us we may feel that many have got only the white keys(happy moments) and no black keys(sad moments). However if we really got to know them, we would realize that everybody has got their own fair share of both black and white keys. It’s how we make use of what we have that makes all the difference.

“One man gets nothing but discord out of a piano; another gets harmony. No one claims the piano is at fault. Life is about the same. The discord is there, and the harmony is there. Study to play it correctly, and it will give forth the beauty; play it falsely, and it will give forth the ugliness. Life is not at fault.”- Author Unknown

Nugget # 63 Life lesson from a Hot Air Balloon!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a life lesson from a hot air balloon.

The mechanism of the hot air balloon is pretty simple; it works on the principle that since hot air is lighter than cold air, when the air inside the balloon is heated up, it causes the balloon to rise and when the air inside the balloon is cooled it causes the balloon to sink. In this manner the air pilot can maneuver the balloon and the people can enjoy their ride.

The hot air balloons before the modern period used to have sandbags (see pic) to weigh them down until lift off and after that the sand was gradually dumped for the balloon to gain height in the air. The same thing is applicable in human life also.

Often in order to rise high in life we may have to cut off heavy weights that keep us down. These may be in the form of bad habits like laziness /being short tempered / sloppiness or having the wrong kind of friends, sometimes even memories of past failures. As long as they weigh us down, we will never be able to rise to heights in life. Just like the sand bags are dumped before the take off  by cutting the ropes attached to them, we too must sever all those things that hold us back from being able to ride high and being all that we want to be in life.

Nugget of Life: Let go of the things that weigh you down so that there will then be enough room in your life to welcome the things that could lift you up.

Have a terrific week.

Nugget # 42 Life is like hair-styling!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share with you the story of an old woman whose attitude made all the difference!

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head. “Well,” she said, “I think I’ll braid my hair today.” So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head. “Hmmm..,” she said, “I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.” So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head. “Well,” she said, “Today I’m going to wear my hair in a pony tail.” So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn’t a single hair on her head. “YAY!” she exclaimed. “I don’t have to fix my hair today!”

-Author Unknown but greatly appreciated

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our Attitudes.”- Charles R Swindoll

Nugget # 34 Life lessons from an Air-freshener!

Hi friends,

If I were to ask you to name a bathroom accessory universally found in every household ,chances are you will say soap/shampoo and yet there is one very important and yet often ignored toiletry in each of our homes ; THE AIR FRESHENER. It comes in different sizes, colors, fragrances,designs/ types and yet its basic features & function always remains the same. This week, I’d like to share with you 6 life-changing lessons from the air freshener. Reading this post, will give you a new respect for your much ignored air freshener. Trust me; you will never look at it with the same eyes ever again! 😉

1)The Air freshener is SELFLESS : It spreads fragrance where it is needed irrespective of whether/not it is responsible for the staleness/mustiness/bad odor. Often in life we may not be the cause for the “staleness” around us but we still can take responsibility to fight it by doing the good we can in our own small way. Oh! to be like that SELFLESS Air freshener which does its job anyway!

“This is what sets the tiny opal of a planet off from a million greater worlds – the possibility of KINDNESS- the possibility of CARE.”- Pam Brown

2)The Air freshener is FAITHFUL:  It takes only one/ two sprays to transform the atmosphere of a room. Often in life, we may wonder what good will come out of our small/insignificant acts of goodness. Truth is, we will never know; the power of a smile/a kind word/ a genuine compliment/a gift to someone in need /a listening ear/ a helping hand may even be the difference between life and death! Never underestimate your POWER to bring joy into another’s life.

“If you think you are too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito!”-Anita Roddick 😉

3)The Air Freshener is often INVISIBLE:  Do any of us pay attention to the air freshener unless it is actually needed? Many of our lives are just like that. We may be invisible to the world repeatedly doing our everyday duties faithfully and doing good to those around.Even when we do, the response we get may not be what we expect. Sometimes we may even be misunderstood/accused of selfish motives and disillusioned,we may even ask ourselves “Why did I even bother?” But the truth is that no good deed is ever wasted just like the seed which germinates all of a sudden, results will come when least expected.Let us never allow the reactions of others from stopping us doing the good we believe we need to do.

“It’s not what you do once in a while, it’s what you do day in and day out that makes the difference.”- Jenny Craig

4)The Air Freshener is FILLED:  As long as the Air freshener is full, the effect of the spray will always be there. Before it is emptied, it needs to get refilled or else it will be useless and thrown into the trash-can, no matter how useful it has been in the past. The same thing applies to us, we need to take good care of ourselves & always be in balance; getting the right rest/ nourishment/ strength/education/entertainment/encouragement we need. We can give to another only when we have enough and hence need to be kind to ourselves too. This may require us to prioritize / even say NO to some things in life. Somebody once called it “being SELFLESSLY SELFISH”. Well, if that is what we have to be,so be it. I think it’s always better to take time & recharge rather than to break down & recharge! 😉

“Guard within yourself that treasure, KINDNESS. Know how to give without hesitation, how to lose without regret, how to acquire without meanness.”- George Sand

5)The Air Freshener is an OPPORTUNIST:  Had the Air Freshener a choice of its sphere of influence, I’m sure it would never choose the musty/stinky places. Figuratively speaking, many of us are just like that air freshener and may be placed in situations we would rather choose not to be,but let us decide today that instead of using up our energy in fighting our circumstances and wishing things were different, let’s just makes the best of exactly what we have and where we have been placed.

“The best place to succeed is where you are, with what you have.”-Charles M Schwab

6)The Air freshener is an OPTIMIST: If the Air freshener were not an ideal optimist, I think, it would have given up on us a long time back. I mean, what does it get in return for every spray of freshness it gives out into the world? It is just used and then ignored until it is needed again but the Air freshener never gives up and slowly the room gets fresher and fresher. Similarly, we need to believe the best about ourselves and the people in our life and treat them as if they already were what they ought to be and thus help them in becoming better!

“Trust people and they will be true to you; treat them greatly and they will show themselves great.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I love this quote by the character Claire Colburn, from the must-see movie ELIZABETH TOWN.

Click to watch this cute cartoon song: LET’S MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE http://youtu.be/OuJMl5ZmKc0 OR  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuJMl5ZmKc0

“Never if possible lie down at night without being able to say: I have made one more human being at least a little wiser or a little happier or a little better this day.”- Charles Kingsley.

“If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.”-Emily Dickinson

“If at the end, all that can be said of you is that you were kind, it is enough.”- Peter Gray B

Nugget of Life: “Happiness is like a perfume, you cannot give it away without getting a few drops on yourself!”-Author Unknown but greatly appreciated!
