Nugget # 77 Life lesson from a little birdie!

“You, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”- Buddha

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share something I learnt from a little birdie that kept pecking on its reflection in the glass. It was as if it was not pleased with what it saw and was trying somehow to make things better.

Isn’t that the way some of us are with ourselves? I mean, we can be understanding and merciful when it comes to others but some of us (me included) can be our own harshest critic sometimes. We can overlook the mistakes of others but we look at our shortcomings through magnifying glasses so that things appear out of proportionately worse off than it really is.

Oft late I have come to notice that people hardly notice or even make as much of an issue as we do of our own goof ups. I mean everyone knows that after all no one is perfect. Then why do we like that cute little bird peck unapprovingly at our reflections when we fail in life? The truth I learnt from that lil bird was that we could definitely enjoy life a lot more if we could just give ourselves a break sometimes and quit being so hard on ourselves whether to be right for acceptance or just for no reason at all!

Life itself can be tough enough without us having to make it harder for ourselves. Often it may be the reactions of people who don’t understand or approve of us that cause us to introspect and analyse ourselves but sometimes it might just be the inner perfectionist in us who looks for areas to tweak to improve. Whatever be the source we just need to silence our inner critic and laugh at ourselves some more. After all, how can we enjoy the beauty in ourselves if we continue pecking at our reflections on the window?

Nugget of Life: View your life with Kind sight. Stop beating yourself up about things from your past. Instead of slapping your forehead and asking: “What was I thinking?” Breathe and ask yourself the kinder question: “What was I learning?”- Author Unknown

Have an awesome week!

Nugget # 33 Life is an Experiment!

“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make, the better.”- Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Hi friends,

According to Peter Bregman: “When we live life as an experiment, we are far more willing to take risks, to acknowledge failure, to learn and develop. That’s what experiments are all about: discovery and growth. There is no real failure in an experiment because it’s all data. If something doesn’t work, that’s simply data that leads to changing behavior to see if something else does work.”

What exactly do we mean by RISK? Taking a Risk does not mean we thoughtlessly endanger ourselves by being rash/ presumptuous. OTOH, it means we carefully evaluate our situation and take calculated risks. Again there is always a 50% chance of failure here but that would be better than the 100% chance of failure by never attempting anything at all.

To put it in a simple equation, Calculated Risk = Boldness + Forethought.

“Often the difference between a successful person and a failure is not one has better abilities or ideas but the courage that one has to bet on one’s ideas, to take a calculated risk – and to act.” – Andre Malraux

I love this quote by William Shedd: “A Ship is safe in harbor but that’s not what ships are for.”

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore, Dream, Discover.”-Mark Twain

Enjoy this poem which teaches us that everything really worth doing in life is a risk. So I’d say, GO AHEAD & JUST DO IT!

RISKS – Janet Rand

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool,
To weep is to risk being called sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement.
To expose feelings is to risk showing your true self.
To place your ideas and your dreams before the crowd is to risk being called naive.
To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure

But risks must be taken, because the greatest risk in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing, and becomes nothing.
He may avoid suffering and sorrow, but he simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow or love.
Chained by his certitude, he is a slave; he has forfeited his freedom.
Only the person who risks is truly free.
