Many years back when I was younger, I had to change schools. On the one hand,I was sad to leave my friends but on the other hand, excited to make new ones. Before leaving,I distributed my autograph book for them to fill out.Out of all the sribblings of my childhood friends, one autograph had always stood out as my favourite esply coz I loved the accompanying picture of a melting strawberry ice cream with it. Today 16 years later, that autograph still continues to be my favourite however for different reasons, today I see life-changing truth in it. That’s why I want to share it with you today. It was:“Life is like an ice cream, enjoy it before it melts!”
In this mad rush of life,we often find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of unending activity. As a day comes to a close,we happily scratch off the completed activities from our never ending To Do List, only to find ourselves updating it with new activities for tomorrow! I too believe in organized action for success and in making things happen rather than waiting for things to happen ….and yet, lately find myself wondering ….. “Will I really be able to enjoy my ice-cream fully before it all melts away?”
It is so funny how we live our lives planning ahead as if everything in life could be forecasted! The real question we need to ask ourselves is “Do we truly realize how uncertain our life really is?” Come to think of it, do any of us definitely know whether we will be here alive and well tomorrow? We often safely associate old age with death and yet watch youngsters die long before their expected time leaving behind their old grandparents. Death is no respecter of persons or age/status/wealth/position/power/authority and yet we find ourselves running after these things in life. After all,“At the end of the game, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.”-Italian proverb
Agreed, this post may seem a bit gloomy when compared to my usual cheery, sparky posts, but the truth is that I’d like for this post to be a wakeup call for those of us well meaning individuals who keep postponing the enjoyment of the moment for a later tomorrow. We need to be kinder to ourselves and do the things that we really enjoy while we can! I am not advocating a total mindless spending resulting in unending credit card debts….Why do we always associate fun with spending more money ? Enjoyment need not always be expensive.Walking barefoot in the wet sand picking up seashells at the seaside, blowing soap bubbles for your baby to catch, walking into a library and enjoying the musty fragrance of books full of treasures to find, watching the fading sunset with a loved one, calling up your parents and telling them how much you love them, finding a long lost friend thru Facebook and arranging to meet up…..can all be things that can brighten up your days and add meaning to your life and definitely won’t cost a fortune.
What are those things that you have always wanted to do but never got down to doing?Would you like to make your own Bucket list today? To quote Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:“Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead! Act, — act in the living Present! Heart within, and God o’erhead!”
We need to learn to be mindful of what really matters: To enjoy our Ice cream before it melts….. To enjoy life while we can!
