Nugget # 93 Life lesson from an Electric Insect Killer Bat!

Hi friends,

It’s been a while now…., hope all of you are doing well. This morning as I was peacefully sitting and enjoying some music with the windows open for fresh air circulation, I watched a fly enter the room. Within moments my serenity was gone as I was now totally distracted by the insect flying all around me. Agitated, I immediately reached out for my Electric Insect Killer Bat and started to sway it around. It was then that I realized that as I had failed to plug it in, there was not enough electric charge and hence it was useless. I immediately plugged the bat into a power source and waited for it to recharge, that is when this nugget hit me.

All of us are just like that electric fly swatter with immense potential and abilities. We are designed with exactly what we need in ourselves to achieve our God given purpose in life, but there is a catch…..just like that electric fly swatter was ineffective because it hadn’t been plugged into the power source and hence there was no charge in it, similarly no matter how great the potential within us, we will be unable to do anything unless we are charged into our power source- the Lord God Almighty. Trying in our own strength to make things happen is just as frustrating as swaying around the uncharged fly swatter. No matter how long or how hard we try, we will not be able to achieve success; instead we may get sore arms and be filled with disillusionment and self doubt.

The time spent in recharging the electric fly swatter was not a waste, as within a matter of 15 minutes, the bat was fully charged and fit to be used. I aimed and swayed it ….and that was the end of the pest! How similar is our case, as we draw power from God Almighty by spending time in prayer and the Word of God, we become dynamite and are filled with strength from above to fulfill our calling here on earth with an ease and confidence, how can we not succeed then?

Nugget # 72 Life is like a game of Chess!

Checkmate? NO, the King has got one more move!

Hi friends,

This week I want to share a life lesson we can learn from the story of a very famous mural (wall painting) in Europe. Read on to find out more….

Every year in Europe they have a tournament that is world renowned in the chess community. At the backdrop of it all, there is the world famous mural called Checkmate.

As you can see in the picture above, it shows Satan playing a game of chess with an opponent. Satan is the man with the red feathered hat. We can see a sly grin on his face as he thinks he has got the king completely surrounded and he whispers checkmate. The other player is completely in distress as he thinks he has got no more moves and is about to be defeated in the game. The name at the bottom of the painting is Checkmate.

One day one of the masters of chess was taking a break from playing in the tournament and he was taking a close look at this painting and he started noticing the chess positions on the chess board in the painting. He kept looking at it and right in the middle of the tournament he screamed out loud , “No its wrong. The painting is wrong…… The king has one more move!”

Friend, the same thing applies to us in life. When all of hell is grinning and laughing and saying checkmate over  our life, we just need to say out loud: “… I don’t think so because the King has got one more move!”

Click below to listen to a Sermon by Jentzen Franklin based on the above story:

Nugget of Life : Remember that no matter how bad it looks, you cannot lose in this chess game of life coz our King of Kings has always got one more move!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Nugget # 66 Life lesson from my little boy!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a life lesson that came to my mind as I watched the little “power-struggles” of my two and half year old son.

I smiled amused as I heard the small grunts of my little one as he unsuccessfully tried to put his backpack on by himself without allowing me to help him with it. After some time, he wanted to eat a banana himself but he just could not figure out how to peel it. As I reached out to help him, he gave me a “don’t  even think about it ” look. Later, I listened to his frustrated little whimpers and snorts as he had managed to put his shoes on himself but with the wrong foot in each shoe. Once again he would not allow me to even get anywhere near the shoes.  The same thing continued as his little hands tried other things. I was filled with joy as I watched my little one take his first steps to independence but seeing his frustration as he tried to do things himself made me wish that he would just let me help him!:)

I reflected on my little one’s actions and started thinking…. How very like him we all are. The business of letting go of things – is not easy. For any of us. We all want to do things in our way and are so unwilling to surrender things to God and watch and learn from Him even when we know that His ways are definitely higher and better than our ways.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”- Isa 55:9

I can almost imagine God with an amused grin on His kind face as He watches us stubbornly cling on tightly to that which we could leave peacefully in His gentle hands.

Nugget # 50 Life is divine chaos!

Hi friends,

Life is divine chaos. First let’s see the more obvious part, the chaos. Chaos is the disorder and confusion in each of our lives or the messy side ;  the bruised knees, disappointments, spilled milk, traffic jams, runny noses, unexpected demise, infirmities, shattered dreams, unkind words,…all of us can add to this list…. However there is also another side to our lives and that is the divine or heavenly side, the lovely side of our lives ; which includes the laughter of family, kisses of children, soothing music, the fragrance of a flower, a well spoken/ written word , cool lemonade, chatting with a friend , fluttering butterflies, answered prayer, an unexpected kindness….this list also goes on. So you see, life is indeed divine chaos. This week I’d like to share this amazingly true but humorous and enjoyable write-up by Larry Harp which challenges us to leave the City of Regret once and for all.

“Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, ‘It might have been.’” – Kurt Vonnegut

Leaving the City of Regret – Larry Harp

“I had not really planned on taking a trip this time of year, and yet I found myself packing rather hurriedly. This trip was going to be unpleasant and I knew in advance that no real good would come of it. I’m talking about my annual “GUILT TRIP.” I got tickets to fly there on WISH I HAD airlines. It was an extremely short flight. I got my baggage, which I could not check. I chose to carry it myself all the way. It was weighed down with a thousand memories of what might have been. No one greeted me as I entered the terminal to the REGRET CITY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. I say international because people from all over the world come to this dismal town.

As I checked into the LAST RESORT HOTEL, I noticed that they would be hosting the year’s most important event, THE ANNUAL PITY PARTY. I wasn’t going to miss that great social occasion. Many of the towns leading citizens would be there.First, there would be the DONE FAMILY, THE SHOULD HAVEs, WOULD HAVEs AND COULD HAVEs. Then came the I HAD FAMILY. You probably know ol’ WISH and his clan. Of course, the OPPORTUNITIES would be present, MISSED AND LOST. The biggest family would be the YESTERDAY’S. There are far too many of them to count, but each one would have a very sad story to share. Then SHATTERED DREAMS would surely make an appearance. And IT’S THEIR FAULT would regale us with stories (excuses) about how things had failed in his life, and each story would be loudly applauded by DON’T BLAME ME and I COULDN’T HELP IT.

Well, to make a long story short, I went to this depressing party knowing that there would be no real benefit in doing so. And, as usual, I became very depressed. But as I thought about all of the stories of failures brought back from the past, it occurred to me that all of this trip and subsequent “pity party” could be cancelled by ME! I started to truly realize that I did not have to be there. I didn’t have to be depressed. One thing kept going through my mind, I CAN’T CHANGE YESTERDAY, BUT I DO HAVE THE POWER TO MAKE TODAY A WONDERFUL DAY. I can be happy, joyous, fulfilled, encouraged, as well as encouraging. Knowing this, I left the City of Regret immediately and left no forwarding address. Am I sorry for mistakes I’ve made in the past? YES! But there is no physical way to undo them.

So, if you’re planning a trip back to the CITY OF REGRET, please cancel all your reservations now. Instead, take a trip to a place called, STARTING AGAIN. I liked it so much that I have now taken up permanent residence there. My neighbors, the I FORGIVE MYSELFS and the NEW STARTS are so very helpful. By the way, you don’t have to carry around heavy baggage, because the load is lifted from your shoulders upon arrival. God bless you in finding this great town. If you can find it – it’s in your own heart – please look me up.  I live on  I CAN DO IT street.”

Nugget # 47 Life lesson from a Shadow!

Hi friends,

This morning I watched my shadow move on the sunlit ground in front of me. That set me thinking and gave me the nugget for this week.

All of us know what shadows are. On looking it up, this is what I could come up with. By definition, a shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. The cross section of the shadow is in fact a reverse projection of the object blocking the light. The sun causes objects to have shadows and at certain times of the day, when the sun is at certain heights, the lengths of shadows change.

“We never need to fear the Shadows because it only means that there is a light shining near somewhere”- Ruth E Renkel

Shadows are the result of the presence of both light and darkness. If it is total light or total darkness, there would be no shadow at all. All of us have shadows in our life, meaning we have both light and darkness in us. Light represents all that is good such as truth, love, kindness, mercy, patience, charity, loyalty, etc while darkness represents the negativity, unkindness, hatred, intolerance, impatience, miserliness, deception, etc in us that obstructs the light from shining through.

“Every life has dark tracts and long stretches of somber tint, and no representation is true to fact which dips its pencil only in light and flings no shadows on the canvas.”- Alexander MacLaren

“An optimist is a person who sees only the lights in the picture, whereas a pessimist sees only the shadows. An idealist, however, is one who sees the light and the shadows, but in addition sees something else: the possibility of changing the picture, of making the lights prevail over the shadows.”- Author Unknown

As long as we are alive we will always be shadows with our light and dark side. However, just like the sun causes shadows to change by varying its position, similarly we too can cause changes in the Shadows of our life by positioning ourselves either closer or farther from the light source. Either we can move closer to the light and the shadows will become lighter or we can move away from the light and the shadows will become darker.

“Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in our own sunshine” – Henry Ward Beecher

Nugget of Life : ” Keep your face always towards the sunshine – and the shadows will fall behind you.”- Walt Whitman.

Nugget # 43 Life lessons from a Pencil

Hi friends, this week I’d like to share some life lessons from a parable of the pencil.

A Pencil Maker took a pencil he made aside, just before putting him into the box. “There are 5 things you need to know,” he told the pencil, “Before I send you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget, and you will become the best pencil you can be.”

1) “You will be able to do many great things, but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone’s hand.”

2) “You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you’ll need it to become a better pencil.”

3)”You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.”

4) “The most important part of you will always be what’s inside.”

5) “On every surface you are used on, you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition, you must continue to write.”

The pencil understood and promised to remember, and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Now let us replace the pencil with ourselves and apply the above life lessons to our lives.

One: We will be able to do many great things, but only if we allow ourselves to be held in God’s hand and allow other human beings to access us for the many gifts we possess.

Two: We will experience painful sharpening from time to time, by going through various problems in life, but we’ll need it to become a stronger person.

Three: We will be able to correct any mistakes we might make.

Four: The most important part of us will always be what’s on the inside.

Five: On every surface we walk through, we must leave our mark. No matter what the situation, we must continue to do our duties.

– (Author Unknown but greatly appreciated.)

Nugget # 23 Life is like Seasons

Hi, this week I’d like to share a lesson that we can learn from Seasons. As the Seasons change, from spring-rainy-summer-autumn-winter, what is our reaction to each Season? This Collage of Seasons I made show some of our joyful reactions to each Season.

Inspite of being fully aware of the beauty of each Season, how often do we find ourselves waiting for a season change when going through some of the not so lovely phases of a particular season. Dripping sweat in summer we fantasize about snow. In the rainy season we look up into the skies longing for the faintest trace of sunlight to dry our clothes or to go out for a leisurely stroll in the park. Winters make us lazy. And then spring- every one’s immediate favorite; but what if every day was spring, how would we collect the lovely red leaves for our scrapbooks without autumn? Again without the monsoons how would we sail our paper boats or rain dance? Similarly how could we huddle by a warm and cozy fireplace drinking hot chocolate if there was no winter? Each season is good and we need seasonal changes. As the saying goes : “Variety is the spice of life”. Yet, there is no denying that we all have our favorites and my personal favorite has always been WINTER! Which is yours?

Now the analogy, Let us look at Our reactions to the Seasons of Our Lives. When we are infants, we want to grow up and go to school, when we get there, our eyes are on college, even before graduating ,our focus is on getting a job , then it is a promotion and then a career, a house, a marriage and then kids, and then grandkids ……and even before we know it, our lives suddenly stand still and we finally look into the mirror and see a wrinkled person whom we don’t recognize. Ruefully, we realize that it is our own reflection that we are staring at. All the while ; through every season we had been earnestly preparing to meet Life, failing to notice that she had been right beside us all the while.

Let this not be our sad story. Let us awake today to the season in our life and enjoy it to the fullest .

Nugget of Life:  “Revel in the freshness of Spring, Soak up the warmth of Summer, Relish the vibrance of Autumn, Face head on the crisp chill of Winter. Celebrate the Circle of Life.”-Chrissy Dewes.
