Nugget # 88 Life lesson from a Jammed Finger !

550px-Treat-a-Broken-Finger-Step-4Bullet2Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a nugget that came to mind as I nursed my bruised finger.

Last Saturday, I accidentally jammed my ring finger as I was hurrying into a supermarket elevator. My finger turned pale and it pained me. So we went to the orthopedist who suggested an X-ray which confirmed no broken bones, but only a slight injury to the soft tissue on my knuckle.

Relieved to hear that, I went with the nurse who taped my injured finger to the unhurt finger next to it. This process is called buddy taping where we use the unaffected finger as a splint to keep the injured finger from moving too much and aggravating the injury.

Later, on reaching home, as I tried to do my daily chores, I was finding it difficult to move my finger since it had been taped to the other one. But that made me draw a paralell to our ordinary everyday lives.

Many times in life we may get jammed or injured and at that time if we ignore our hurt and just go on as if nothing happened, later in the long run, we will have to face the dire consequences of a serious damage due to neglect. Just like in the case of the injury we used a buddy splint, in our real life situations also, when hurt, the right move will be to open up to a buddy/persons we can trust and pray with. We may also brainstorm with them about how we can solve the issue. If nothing else, we will be able to experience a few moments of temporary relief at least instead of carrying the heavy load ourselves.

Just like in the case of my finger, we will remove the buddy tape when the swelling and pain have subsided and the finger is healed. Similarly, after some time, when we have drawn enough strength and courage, we will be able to move ahead more confidently in our life.

PS: My finger is healed and I have removed the buddy splint! : )

Have a blessed week!

Nugget # 61 Life lesson from a Question on the Human Body!

Hi Friends,

This week’s nugget is based on a story in which a mother asks her son a question on the human body.

One day a mother asked her son: “What is the most important part of your body?”

Thinking that sound was very important to him, he answered “Ears, Mommy.”

She said, “No, there are many people who are deaf but keep thinking about it and I will ask you again.”

The next time she asked him, he answered, “Mommy, sight is very important to everybody, so it must be our eyes.”

She answered “You are learning fast, but the answer is not correct because there are many people who are blind.”

Stumped again, he tried other answers but each time her answer was “No, but you are getting smarter child.”

Finally seeing the confusion on her son’s face she told him, “This question is very important and that is why I wanted you to think and answer. Son, the most important body part is your shoulder.”

Surprised he asked her, “Is it because it holds up my head?”

She replied, “No, it is because it can hold the head of a friend or a loved one when they cry. The most important body part is actually the most unselfish part because it is sympathetic to the pain of others!”

Someone who still has the time to be kind,

Someone who still has the faith to believe

Someone who’s ready by thought, word or deed

To reach out a hand in the hour of need.

Nugget # 52 Life lesson from a New Neighbor

Hi friends,

We recently shifted house and with it came a whole new world of possibilities and challenges. The picture that comes to mind is the butterfly suddenly emerging from its cozy cocoon. Though change is definitely necessary for growth and often we may even desire it, the real truth is that transition is never easy.

While I left my older residence, the time came to say Good bye to my next door neighbor. I realized ruefully that though the two of us regularly smiled & made small talk with each other while we met in the lift, we had never really got to know each other. As we parted, we exchanged phone numbers as it dawned on both of us that caught up in the busyness of life in the past 3 years, we had wasted the opportunity to have become good friends. Determined not to repeat this mistake ever again, I looked forward to meeting new people and making new acquaintances & friends. This week, I’d like to share something my new neighbor just mentioned while we chatted. It took me a moment to grasp what she meant but as it sunk in; I loved what she said & so am sharing it with you.

What she said was this: “We are all here either temporarily permanent or permanently temporary.”

Though she was talking about how some of us plan to stay for longer periods but may have to leave before time and some of us come to stay for shorter periods but end up staying longer; so while we stayed together as residents of the building, it was good to maintain a close rapport with each other.

I totally agree with what she said but the lesson I learnt from her words was a bit more profound. How often we take what we have within us / around us for granted? Be it our health, our families, our friends, our loved ones, our neighbors, our acquaintances, our jobs, our colleagues, our talents….We conveniently forget that we are all here either  permanently temporary or temporarily permanent. Isn’t our life itself the greatest gift we have? There is so much truth in the saying “Familiarity breeds contempt” and yet I pray that may we never get so familiar with the people/ things /the blessings in our life so that if ever we lose them, we will never be haunted with the regret of having taken them for granted but instead we will have joyful memories of how we treasured what we once had.

“Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are. Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart. Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow. Let me hold you while I may, for it may not always be so. One day I shall dig my nails into the earth, or bury my face in the pillow, or stretch myself taut, or raise my hands to the sky and want, more than all  the world, your return.”- Mary Jean Iron

I think once we realize that everything including this life is just a gift and for a season; we will learn to be more grateful and make the most of what we have, while we have it and that will make everyday a day of joy & gratitude.

Nugget of Life: “Do what makes you happy, be with who makes you smile. Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live.”

Have a fun-filled week!

Cheers,

Nugget # 44 Life is like a party!

 Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share this beautiful analogy of life that I just came across. No matter what comes up in our life, if we learn to develop an attitude of gratitude we will be able to celebrate life as a party.

Nugget of Life: Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we’re here, we should dance. Live For Today…Plan For Tomorrow…Party Tonight..!!!

Have an awesome week,

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie
