Nugget # 90 Life lesson from a Tom & Jerry Tale!

tom and jerryHi friends,

This week I’d like to share a nugget that came to mind as my son and I watched a Tom and Jerry Cartoon this afternoon. The tale was about a little duckling that happened to read ‘The Ugly Duckling’ story . The duckling seeing that the picture in the book resembled him, becomes very unhappy believing that he too was ugly. The sad little ducky in his grief begins to try different ways to end his life, even walking into the mouth of the greedy cat Tom but is saved over and over and again by the mouse Jerry. The story has a happy ending in which the little duckling meets a female duckling who tells him that he looks cute. Hearing this , the duckling becomes happy as he has found someone who looks just like him and who likes him as he is. In the last scene, both of the ducklings go away to live together happily ever after.

Life lessons :

1)     Often in life we too like that little duckling make certain false assumptions about ourselves based on what we see or hear from others. It often takes a true friend to speak the truth to us.

2)     Many times we may be drifting through this life without having clarity about our purpose. That really drains the joy of our life. We need to search our hearts and then open ourselves to different experiences and try our hand at different things in order to find out what we really enjoy. Our purpose will always lie where our passion is and with what talents we are equipped with. Just like when the little ducky discovered his purpose, there was a spring in his step, in the same way, once we discover our real purpose, our life will be worth the living!

Nugget # 88 Life lesson from a Jammed Finger !

550px-Treat-a-Broken-Finger-Step-4Bullet2Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a nugget that came to mind as I nursed my bruised finger.

Last Saturday, I accidentally jammed my ring finger as I was hurrying into a supermarket elevator. My finger turned pale and it pained me. So we went to the orthopedist who suggested an X-ray which confirmed no broken bones, but only a slight injury to the soft tissue on my knuckle.

Relieved to hear that, I went with the nurse who taped my injured finger to the unhurt finger next to it. This process is called buddy taping where we use the unaffected finger as a splint to keep the injured finger from moving too much and aggravating the injury.

Later, on reaching home, as I tried to do my daily chores, I was finding it difficult to move my finger since it had been taped to the other one. But that made me draw a paralell to our ordinary everyday lives.

Many times in life we may get jammed or injured and at that time if we ignore our hurt and just go on as if nothing happened, later in the long run, we will have to face the dire consequences of a serious damage due to neglect. Just like in the case of the injury we used a buddy splint, in our real life situations also, when hurt, the right move will be to open up to a buddy/persons we can trust and pray with. We may also brainstorm with them about how we can solve the issue. If nothing else, we will be able to experience a few moments of temporary relief at least instead of carrying the heavy load ourselves.

Just like in the case of my finger, we will remove the buddy tape when the swelling and pain have subsided and the finger is healed. Similarly, after some time, when we have drawn enough strength and courage, we will be able to move ahead more confidently in our life.

PS: My finger is healed and I have removed the buddy splint! : )

Have a blessed week!

Nugget # 62 Life is like an Escalator!

“Life is like an escalator. You see, it carries you on regardless. And you might as well enjoy the view and seize every opportunity while you’re passing. Otherwise, it’ll be too late.” – Sophie Kinsella.

Hi friends,

This week  I came to know that one of my good friends would be leaving the city. It shook my world for some time as I felt the icy cold grip of an utter sense of loss. But after some calls, some sleep, a shower and some elaichi tea, I realized that I had accepted the reality and was feeling better, now ready to share my next nugget with you! So here goes….

Life is  like an escalator and we step onto it in the hope of reaching our destination. On our way up, we stand and watch others on the parallel escalator also on their way. Both of us are taken forward but in opposite directions. The same thing happens in life. As we go through life people step onto their escalators and for some time we can see them, smile at them, wave at them, sometimes if we stretch maybe we can even touch them for a second and then all of a sudden they are gone. Our paths were different right from the start and of course we knew it but in spite of that when given the good fortune , if even only for a moment for our paths to cross and  we come to know each other,we conveniently forget that which we knew all along maybe coz we just didn’t want to remember- Life is an escalator and all of us are on our way to the destination.

“Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be attained only by someone who is detached”- Simone Weil

Nugget of Life :  “Love without attachment is light.”- Norman O.Brown. Let us therefore practise detached attachment & benefit from the advantages of both attachment and detachment. 😉

Have an insightful week!

Nugget # 39 Life lesson in adversity

Hi friends,
The last few weeks have been life changing for me. Honestly speaking I was truly shaken to the core with every kind of adversity thrown against me all on a sudden. A fractured foot, misunderstandings, power failure, cold indifference , you name it, I experienced it. I was even asked “why can’t you think like others?” When I was asked the same question I‘ve often asked myself many times in the past, something inside me just broke. I think it was my spirit. To put things in simple words, I had hit rock bottom and was full of questions and with zero energy. Your sparky laurie had actually lost her “spark”! It was as if a dark cloud loomed over my horizon and I was paralysed to fight it!It was at this time that a very dear friend of mine (who inspite of having undergone a rough patch in her life recently ) stood by me with love and encouragement. Today she smiles with me as the sun shines on my horizon once again.Thank God for the wonderful gift of friendship! She is the kind of friend I aspire to be and I want to have forever!

The quote “In prosperity your friends know you, but in adversity you know your friends” suddenly became my life truth.  Today I realize how in the past I’ve wasted a lot of my time trying to make every relationship in my life work optimally , even some that never brought me any joy! In my simplistic way of thinking, I would tell myself if I would just be kinder or try harder, I could make this work but oft late I’ve realized that there is nothing more complex than human relations. People are not always straightforward and often behave in various ways because of different reasons and life is too short and too precious for us to sit and wonder why. Let us celebrate life with those wonderful people who we actually enjoy relating to, who understand and love us for who we are, who believe the best about us even when things may appear otherwise, who love us enough to confront and clarify maybe even correct us when we are wrong, whose thoughtful silences and kind actions speak louder to us than words, those special people the very thought of whom brings rest, freshness and joy in our minds. People who enrich our lives and whom we can learn from and grow with.
As I always say, there is a lesson to learn from everything in life and the lesson I learnt during this hard ordeal in my life was that some friendships work, some don’t and some change with time and that is alright! 😉

Nugget of life : “There comes a time in life when we have to let go of all the pointless drama and the people who create it and surround ourselves with people who make us laugh so hard that we forget the bad and focus solely on the good. After all, life is too short to be anything but happy!

I take this opportunity to thank all of you my blogger friends who have spoken words of appreciation and encouragement to me especially in these last few weeks. Little did you know how much your kind words meant to me during that trying period of my life! Thank you from the depths of my heart! 😉
Have a fun filled week!
Cheers,
Sparky laurie
