Nugget # 109 Life lesson from breakfast!

fried-eggHi friends,

Hope you are enjoying 2018!

Many of us, (including me) have our list of New Year Resolutions ready and may already be feeling overwhelmed or defeated with one week already having passed by and not being able to do as planned. I’d just like to share something that encouraged me : I was in the kitchen making breakfast and was quickly preparing an egg. After sprinkling salt and black pepper on the yolk of the bulls eye, I was scooping the perfectly ready egg onto a plate when the egg accidentally slipped and fell onto the stove… I was surprised and irritated with myself at the same time. I dumped the perfectly cooked egg-( now a mess) into the dust bin and quickly wiped up the stove. I then got another egg and repeated the process. This time I plated it with a bit more caution. That’s when this nugget just came to me- I was reminded of how our perfectly made plans may slip and fall for no reason or fault of ours at all, and that’s alright. All we need to do, is just get rid of the mess and restart the process…. Go again!

Nugget# 96 Life lesson from SUE THOMAS: F.B.Eye!

Sue(Deanne) with Levi (Jesse)…Notice his ID!! 🙂

Hi Friends,

Firstly, let me apologize for not being around for a while. Hope you’ve been doing great. At my end, I’ve been going through some fine learning experiences here in the University of Life. Nobody really prefers to enroll at the School of Life’s Hard Knocks and this post is especially dedicated to all those of us who have graduated from there! 🙂

The real Sue Thomas F.B.I. with her hearing dog Grace!

I’ve recently been enjoying watching the famous Sue ThomasF.B.Eye,a critically acclaimed groundbreaking TV series inspired by the true story of Sue Thomas, who although profoundly deaf from the age of 18 months, overcame significant obstacles to work surveillance for the F.B.I. Incidentally, Deanne Bray, who plays the role of Sue is herself a severely deaf actress who was also strongly encouraged by her parents to speak and read lips.

As portrayed in the series, Sue Thomas is about to start her first real job – which happens to be with the F.B.I. Though initially underestimated, very soon she is recognized for her intelligence and unique lip reading skills and she lives her hard earned dream when she along with her adorable hearing dog Levi join the bureau’s elite surveillance team.

The awesome team from (Left-Right)  Dimitri,Tara,Bobby,Lucy,Myles,Levi,Sue & Jack

Joining Sue, Levi and Jack on the team are Bobby Manning, a charismatic agent who likes to bend the rules; Dimitrius Gans, the senior member of the surveillance unit; Lucy Dotson, the team’s right hand support person and Sue’s best friend & roommate ; Myles Leland III, the Boston born, Harvard educated, self-proclaimed ‘Einstein with a gun;’ and Tara Williams, the quirky but brilliant go-to tech expert.

This is a show about courage & perseverance, it not only keeps us on the edge of our seat, but also makes us laugh & cry. Though there are many lessons that one could learn from this delightful series (a real breath of fresh air in the highly contaminated & toxic atmosphere of TV entertainment today), the one that I would like to share is IDENTITY.

When we split up the word Identity, we come up with ‘I’  & ‘dent.’ The pronoun ‘I’ refers to the real us without any apology, compromise or mask ; it refers to the basic core of who we really are,our strengths and weaknesses just as they are.

The other part dent refers to 1) a notch or hollow made by a blow or pressure. 2) An impression or effect made usually against resistance.

Like I said in the beginning, we are all dented by life. To succeed, we need to grab life by the horns anyway with absolutely no excuses and seek to live out our dreams boldly and courageously no matter what the odds or obstacles. In the story, Sue cannot hear and even speaks with a lisp. But she uses what she has which is her unique lip reading skills that she has worked on since her childhood. Her mother has been her guiding force always reminding her that in spite of her disability, she could be everything she wanted to as long as she worked twice as hard. She skates, sings and plays the piano as well. If she was like any other person, I doubt she would have inspired us as much. It is her ‘Dent’ that makes her so beautiful and compassionate. She knows what it is to be unwanted, to be the odd one out. And that is what causes her to select Levi in spite of the abuse that he had been through. She in a way empowers him and he ends up saving her life!

It is when we fully accept the ‘I’ in Identity, which includes the good, bad and the ugly (dents & all)…. both in ourselves as well as in others , That is the divine moment when we have ceased to simply exist and truly live our life to its fullest!animated-flower-image-0091 Click for the  WHO I AM song with favorite sneak peeks from the Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye …Enjoy!

Nugget # 87 Life is a Process!

1Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share the importance of understanding one word and that is “PROCESS”. For the people of today’s generation, the word may be quite familiar with food processors which speed up our cooking , however the nugget I’d like to share talks about process in the opposite sense. Let me explain this with the help of an easily understood illustration. Consider a woman who just finds out she is pregnant, she is overjoyed and shares the good news with her loved ones. Some moments of pure bliss but as days and weeks go by, there comes the nausea and the tiredness and the vomiting and the aches and pains and suddenly it doesn’t all seem so much fun. So what does she do? Well, there is nothing else she can do but continue and let the process go on. As long as she goes on doing what she has to do, eating right, exercising right, taking her supplements and going for her regular check ups, the baby in her will grow healthier and then after her wait of 9 months, will come her moment of joy when she can finally hold the newborn baby in her hands.

The time and the sacrifices and the pain she undergoes will only make her baby more precious to her. The same thing applies to us in our life. All of us have to go through different processes in life and just like the lady, not every stage may be desirable, we need to stick with it and go through each stage with full cooperation in order to reach where we want to or get what we want. Some of us may have a dream that may seem in no way attainable as of today but if we consistently work towards smaller goals in that direction we will in the long run after having overcome many milestones, finally be able to reach where we once dreamt of reaching.

Friend, what is it that you would like to do or become in your wildest dream? Remember, you need to go through the process, every day should draw you nearer to your dream. Even when you feel like you haven’t achieved much , consistently keep trying to do more each day and one day you will find yourself living your dream.

Nugget of Life : Keep on keeping on!

Nugget # 84 Life lesson from one of the best American Movies ever made!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share something that came to mind as I watched the 1946 American Christmas Drama film called ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’

It is the story of George Bailey , a man who has had to give up his dreams of traveling and going places in order to help others. Frustrated and feeling like a failure he opts for suicide on Christmas Eve. He is miraculously saved by the intervention of his guardian angel Clarence who shows George all the lives he has unknowingly touched and how different life in his community would be had he never been born.

This movie set me thinking of how many of us like George may not really be aware of the lives that we are responsible for changing by some small act of ours. Often we may not be doing any great thing, many times we may never even be in the lime light only behind doors and doing our duties faithfully not even aware of the mighty influence we may be having on someone somewhere! At this point I am reminded of an incident when my sister-in-law shared some money with a family who was struggling. Later on they told her that they were contemplating suicide and it was her action that made them change their mind. We may never fully know here and now how crucial our small acts of concern and kindness can be. It took a supernatural visitation to open George’s eyes. Let this movie do that for us and open our eyes to the truth that truly, our life is pretty awesome and it’s a Wonderful Life after all!

For those of you who would like to watch the movie, here’s the link:

Nugget # 75 Life is not a Dress Rehearsal!

“Life is not a dress rehearsal.”- Rose Tremain

Hi friends,

Often in life we find ourselves ruminating about the past and wishing that things had happened differently. Many times we wish that we could just rewind a few of the events in life, some misunderstandings/some words spoken/ some words left unspoken…..and just replay it again the right way. Then things would be better and all would be right again but the truth is that this life of ours is not a dress rehearsal.

A dress rehearsal is defined as a full-scale uninterrupted rehearsal or practice of a theater or musical performance with costumes and stage properties. This practice is intended to perfect the performance before the public sees it, making sure every detail of the show meets expectations.

However when it comes to life, we do not have to live life on autopilot and just take what comes. In fact since life is not a dress rehearsal we should ensure that we live it exactly the way we would want it. For this we may have to make several detours and improvements on the way. It may even require us to let go of the labels that either we have put on ourselves or others may have. Just because we have been one way all our life doesn’t mean that we should die that way. We need to listen to our heart and do all the things that we want to but never could. In some cases we may have to put down some full stops and start new paragraphs to get ahead in life.

Nugget # 72 Life is like a game of Chess!

Checkmate? NO, the King has got one more move!

Hi friends,

This week I want to share a life lesson we can learn from the story of a very famous mural (wall painting) in Europe. Read on to find out more….

Every year in Europe they have a tournament that is world renowned in the chess community. At the backdrop of it all, there is the world famous mural called Checkmate.

As you can see in the picture above, it shows Satan playing a game of chess with an opponent. Satan is the man with the red feathered hat. We can see a sly grin on his face as he thinks he has got the king completely surrounded and he whispers checkmate. The other player is completely in distress as he thinks he has got no more moves and is about to be defeated in the game. The name at the bottom of the painting is Checkmate.

One day one of the masters of chess was taking a break from playing in the tournament and he was taking a close look at this painting and he started noticing the chess positions on the chess board in the painting. He kept looking at it and right in the middle of the tournament he screamed out loud , “No its wrong. The painting is wrong…… The king has one more move!”

Friend, the same thing applies to us in life. When all of hell is grinning and laughing and saying checkmate over  our life, we just need to say out loud: “… I don’t think so because the King has got one more move!”

Click below to listen to a Sermon by Jentzen Franklin based on the above story:

Nugget # 70 Life is like Sailing!

“I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving: To reach the port of heaven, we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it-but we must sail, and not drift nor lie at anchor.”- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Hi friends,

The last couple of days have been ones of tremendous learning for me. So I just feel like having a heart to heart with you this week. While I’m happily employed now, I’ve found that there can be numerous things that being out of touch with can cause within us fear- the fear of appearing to be wrong. I asked myself more than once, why am I so afraid of being wrong? I wondered…. was it simple self protection or just plain vanity?

But then something my husband said really made me sit up and think hard. He asked me: “Laura, if only we would be just like our little boy; not afraid to make mistakes and ever so ready to learn and move on when we do, wouldn’t we be much happier?” The question to ask is Why is it that we as grownups get stuck instead of moving on?

Then and there I learnt a lesson, a good one too that revealed a hidden part of me that was somehow somewhere within so afraid of being wrong. Isn’t that exactly what our Lord Jesus meant by us becoming like little children- bold and unafraid?

And so I’ve decided to set my sails up; ready to face the wind, a smile on my face, come what may, I am going to enjoy the ride. Wishing you the same 🙂

Have a pleasant week.

Nugget # 65 Life is like a See-saw!

Hi friends,

This week I would like to compare Life to a See-saw.

Life is like a See-saw with its every ‘down’, there is an ‘up’.

As mentioned in my earlier post, many times things change in our life rather unexpectedly. People change, situations change, obstacles and problems change and we learn to change in order to cope with this ever changing life. Just as for the see-saw to be proper in its functioning, it has to be in movement with one side up and the other side down, the see-saw of life too is never static and always changes with one side up and the other side down. The only one constant in this See-saw of Life is our relationship with God.

While on the Down-side of life, it is good to remember the eaglet story in which the momma eagle pushes her baby off the edge in order that it will flap its wings and learn to fly first and then soar high. Often we may feel the dread of the little eaglet as we reach the edge of the precipice and are pushed hard by the hand of circumstance into the unknown.  But as we step out of our comfort zone, we can be sure of one thing and that is we can never fall beyond where His able hands will catch us. It is in such situations that we learn of an inner strength that we possess that helps us to let go and let God and that becomes our Up-side! 🙂

Nugget of Life: “It is always darkest before the dawn, so if it’s your down phase now, hang in there because your up phase is right round the corner”

Have a wonderful week,

Nugget # 63 Life lesson from a Hot Air Balloon!

Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share a life lesson from a hot air balloon.

The mechanism of the hot air balloon is pretty simple; it works on the principle that since hot air is lighter than cold air, when the air inside the balloon is heated up, it causes the balloon to rise and when the air inside the balloon is cooled it causes the balloon to sink. In this manner the air pilot can maneuver the balloon and the people can enjoy their ride.

The hot air balloons before the modern period used to have sandbags (see pic) to weigh them down until lift off and after that the sand was gradually dumped for the balloon to gain height in the air. The same thing is applicable in human life also.

Often in order to rise high in life we may have to cut off heavy weights that keep us down. These may be in the form of bad habits like laziness /being short tempered / sloppiness or having the wrong kind of friends, sometimes even memories of past failures. As long as they weigh us down, we will never be able to rise to heights in life. Just like the sand bags are dumped before the take off  by cutting the ropes attached to them, we too must sever all those things that hold us back from being able to ride high and being all that we want to be in life.

Nugget of Life: Let go of the things that weigh you down so that there will then be enough room in your life to welcome the things that could lift you up.

Have a terrific week.

Nugget # 37 Life is like cycling!

“Life is like a ten speed bicycle, most of us have gears we never use”- Charles M Schulz

Hi friends,

This week I’d just like to share some lessons of life from cycling. And to all you my friends who know to ride a bike, congrats from me, coz the truth is I still don’t know cycling! 😉

I think I was in the 3rd grade when I got a cycle of my own choice, it was a purple one. I was so excited to learn how to ride and thus began my first riding lessons with my sister and father. I got on excitedly and went a little distance and fell. I scraped my knee and cried in pain. After that I never got on the bike again coz I didn’t want to fall down again. I never fell down again but I never learnt cycling either!

The same thing applies to all of our lives. We are all naturals when it comes to playing it safe, honestly, does that even require any effort on our part? Isn’t it true that anything of lasting value that has ever been achieved was at first thought of as foolish and out of this world? I mean, who has all the answers and who is perfect all the time? Many of us may think we have it all figured out, but can’t just one blow of life make us rethink it all? Don’t we graduate after the examination? And even after the result comes, isn’t the learning more important? Each one of us were toddlers once upon a time who learned to walk because we were never afraid to get up each time we fell, nor did the fear of appearing foolish ever keep us from trying again. But today we fear the ridicule of people, being unpopular, not belonging, and so we either bury within ourselves the desire to learn/reach out to others/do many things we really would like to. I mean don’t we all do that which we believe is the best for us and the people in our lives? A lesson I learnt recently and still am learning is that we need not always explain ourselves, our friends don’t need it and our enemies will not believe it anyway!

Maturity is a lengthy process and takes time. Also, though we may be mature in one area of life, we may not in another area simply because we haven’t been put in a situation to learn that lesson yet!  Let us therefore not be afraid to put ourselves out there as long as we come back learning something. As the saying goes, “its okay to fall if you pick up something everytime you get up.” Often the people who criticize us are the ones who have already made and learnt from the very mistakes we are making in the present. So I think we need to be kinder to ourselves and allow ourselves to make more mistakes and learn irrespective of what others may think or say.

Many times the good we intend to do/say may be twisted or even taken the wrong way but as Dr Seuss says “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” All of us have our own personal quirks and the only difference is that some of us are open about it and some are not. A picture perfect life is an illusion. All of us are humans, with failures and successes. Let us free ourselves to learn from our failures and celebrate our successes.  All of us by nature may not be risk- takers and we need so badly non dreamers too in order to bring the dreamers among us back to earth from time to time!;) Personally, I’d like to carry that childlike (not childish) wonder and simplicity to my grave but I also would like to die a wise person and that I believe comes with learning every day.

I’ve always admired writers who are compassionate & honestly inspiring and the truth is that often during some of the lowest points in my life (and all of us have them) I’ve survived by reading some such writings and learnt so much from their lives. I aspire to be such a kind of writer; to share lessons life has taught me in the hope that it may help someone out there someday. We never know in which way what we say/do is going to help  someone so I’d say just go ahead and say your piece and don’t you dear friend ever make my mistake of never learning how to cycle just coz I was afraid of falling! 😉

Nugget of Life: Everyone is a genius but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid!

Have a fun filled week!
