Nugget # 103 Life is an Acappella!

acapellaHi friends,

Hope you are doing fine. This week I’d like to share a nugget that many of us could relate to. Firstly let’s define what an acapella really is: Acapella according to Internet slang refers to “vocal music without instruments.” The first time I heard this kind of music I was flabbergasted. Since then I have been a big fan of all kinds of acapella music.

Click here to hear the first acapella song I heard. It’s made from an old Hindi film song. The song was brilliantly remade using sounds made by voice, mouth and body only. Can you imagine, there are no musical instruments used in making it! Amazing right? 🙂

46840

This week I’d like to share how much we too are like Acapella singers in our life as we do the many roles handed over to us- a daughter/son, a sister/bro, a spouse, a parent either by choice or chance, a homemaker / a career person, a friend, a writer, teacher, story teller, a cook, a cleaner, a singer, a believer… the list goes on endlessly…. And we can keep adding or subtracting from it. Just like how in acapella, we mainly sing vocals but simultaneously we also imitate the other instruments or sounds to give it the effect of hearing the original track , in life too we may be called to play several other roles in addition to our main role. Just like the acapella singers focus one by one on each sound and then synchronize it with the other sounds similarly we need to give our 100% dedication to each role assigned to us and do it with a spirit of excellence. Later on, we will be able to manage our time and prioritize the things according to their urgency. Sometimes we will have to postpone or even drop some activities from our list in order to live a balanced & stress-free life. Many times we may have to even sacrifice certain privileges just in order to see a smile on another’s face. At these times it may be tempting to ignore ourselves or others, the optimal method is to be able to know when and where to draw the line. Prayer & planning as well as delegation & brain storming with friends & family helps us to do this. Once we have drawn a blueprint, it is essential as far as possible to stick to it. However we need to be flexible enough to incorporate changes as we move along.

downloadThe final result will be the acapella where our different roles are played out successfully & now we can hear the lovely song played in our own unique version. Surely, there will be mixed responses and reactions to the music of our life but as long as we have tried our best and even enjoy or like what we have done, we can lean back and nod our heads to the trendy beat of the song we have always loved!

Nugget# 96 Life lesson from SUE THOMAS: F.B.Eye!

08

Sue(Deanne) with Levi (Jesse)…Notice his ID!! 🙂

Hi Friends,

Firstly, let me apologize for not being around for a while. Hope you’ve been doing great. At my end, I’ve been going through some fine learning experiences here in the University of Life. Nobody really prefers to enroll at the School of Life’s Hard Knocks and this post is especially dedicated to all those of us who have graduated from there! 🙂

img20021188527hi

The real Sue Thomas F.B.I. with her hearing dog Grace!

I’ve recently been enjoying watching the famous Sue ThomasF.B.Eye,a critically acclaimed groundbreaking TV series inspired by the true story of Sue Thomas, who although profoundly deaf from the age of 18 months, overcame significant obstacles to work surveillance for the F.B.I. Incidentally, Deanne Bray, who plays the role of Sue is herself a severely deaf actress who was also strongly encouraged by her parents to speak and read lips.

As portrayed in the series, Sue Thomas is about to start her first real job – which happens to be with the F.B.I. Though initially underestimated, very soon she is recognized for her intelligence and unique lip reading skills and she lives her hard earned dream when she along with her adorable hearing dog Levi join the bureau’s elite surveillance team.

78849-1

The awesome team from (Left-Right)  Dimitri,Tara,Bobby,Lucy,Myles,Levi,Sue & Jack

Joining Sue, Levi and Jack on the team are Bobby Manning, a charismatic agent who likes to bend the rules; Dimitrius Gans, the senior member of the surveillance unit; Lucy Dotson, the team’s right hand support person and Sue’s best friend & roommate ; Myles Leland III, the Boston born, Harvard educated, self-proclaimed ‘Einstein with a gun;’ and Tara Williams, the quirky but brilliant go-to tech expert.

This is a show about courage & perseverance, it not only keeps us on the edge of our seat, but also makes us laugh & cry. Though there are many lessons that one could learn from this delightful series (a real breath of fresh air in the highly contaminated & toxic atmosphere of TV entertainment today), the one that I would like to share is IDENTITY.

When we split up the word Identity, we come up with ‘I’  & ‘dent.’ The pronoun ‘I’ refers to the real us without any apology, compromise or mask ; it refers to the basic core of who we really are,our strengths and weaknesses just as they are.

The other part dent refers to 1) a notch or hollow made by a blow or pressure. 2) An impression or effect made usually against resistance.

Like I said in the beginning, we are all dented by life. To succeed, we need to grab life by the horns anyway with absolutely no excuses and seek to live out our dreams boldly and courageously no matter what the odds or obstacles. In the story, Sue cannot hear and even speaks with a lisp. But she uses what she has which is her unique lip reading skills that she has worked on since her childhood. Her mother has been her guiding force always reminding her that in spite of her disability, she could be everything she wanted to as long as she worked twice as hard. She skates, sings and plays the piano as well. If she was like any other person, I doubt she would have inspired us as much. It is her ‘Dent’ that makes her so beautiful and compassionate. She knows what it is to be unwanted, to be the odd one out. And that is what causes her to select Levi in spite of the abuse that he had been through. She in a way empowers him and he ends up saving her life!

It is when we fully accept the ‘I’ in Identity, which includes the good, bad and the ugly (dents & all)…. both in ourselves as well as in others , That is the divine moment when we have ceased to simply exist and truly live our life to its fullest!animated-flower-image-0091 Click for the  WHO I AM song with favorite sneak peeks from the Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye …Enjoy!

Nugget # 95 Life is like a game of Scrabble!

scrabbleHi friends,

Hope you are all doing good. It’s been a while now but I havn’t been able to sit down ,process and pen down my thoughts. A lot had been happening, the most joyful being the birth of my second son.:)

Today as I was playing a game of Scrabble with my elder son, this nugget came to mind.

We were playing a junior version of the famous board game Scrabble. In which each player gets to pick at random 5 tiles with a letter on it from a Scrabble Bag. We were then to place the letters on the Board which had different letters on it .Each player got a turn to place a tile of his choice and watch the board as the next player places a tile of his choice. The main aim was to complete the words on the Game Board. And for every word we made, we would get a blue coin. The person with the most blue coins would be the winner of the game.

Well as the game progressed, my son was leading and then suddenly I got a letter J and made a word he wanted to make. I watched in amusement as his little face crinkled up and he took the tile I had just placed on the board  (which entitled to me my first blue coin) and put it back in the scrabble bag and shake the bag so that the coin would be lost. …suddenly it struck me, isn’t this typical of what we do to one another in this rat race of life?

  • We all have been given tiles at random, we don’t get to choose and pick what we are given.- Each one of us has been given from God a unique fingerprint, personal characteristics, quirks, strengths and weaknesses. We got to learn to play with what we have got and allow others to play with what they have got.
  • Just because we don’t like a person or that person doesn’t fit into our idea of what is right or even a likely candidate for success , doesn’t  change the fact that the person does have the vital tile necessary for completing the word on the board.
  • If we discredit the person and snatch the tile from the person and put it into the scrabble bag and shake it as my son did, we may still be ahead in the game, but we have denied the next person the joy of contributing something. More importantly, the game comes to a standstill so   in a way we are obstructing the progress of the game.
  • We should never lose focus of the object why we are playing the game. As I checked the object of the game, this is what was written: To spell each word on the board using the letter tiles. Players identify the words based on the pictures on the board. Any player who completes a word takes a blue coin from the Scrabble Bag. When all the words on the board are covered, the player with the most coins is the winner. Wouldn’t it be better if we just focused on completing the words on the board rather than on who was winning…Of course there will be a winner for each game but how much better it would be to just play our best and enjoy the Board game and find out who wins most coins at the end…
  • The same thing applies to our relationships in life, the people we work with, our spouses, our relatives, our friends, our churches, let’s work in a spirit of Unity and try and empower one another by looking out for the best in each other and putting forward our very best.
  • Each of us has a vital piece necessary for completion of this Board Game of Life. None of us can do it alone. We need each other to complete the game. I am reminded of the acronym TEAM- Together Everyone Achieves More. True, we may achieve a lot in this life by pushing ourselves up by putting other people down but how much better to handhold each other and walk together to a quicker & better success. The pity of participating in life as if it were a rat race is just that in the end of it all, you remain a rat! We are more than that, we are unique creations of the Most High God.
  • Like in a symphony, all the musical instruments should play their part without any one instrument dominating; we all have got our little bit to do in making this life a beautiful one. You may think , what will I do with just this one tile in my hand?, True, alone we can do NOTHING, but when we come together with the other pieces on the Board, we are able to make meaningful words.

Back to our Board game, I corrected my son and he placed the letter back and I got my blue coin. We completed the game and of course, in the end, my 6 year old was the winner with 4 blue coins!!! 🙂

Nugget # 91 Life lesson from a Christmas Carol!

imagesHi friends,
With Christmas right round the corner, this week, I’d like to share with you a nugget inspired by a Christmas Carol. You must be familiar with the song ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’. Click here to watch the RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER MOVIE.

Well, as I listened to the lyrics, it talked about how due to his shiny red nose, all the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names and never let him play in their reindeer games. Until one foggy Xmas eve Santa Claus comes along and asks Rudolph the Reindeer if he could with his shiny red nose guide the sleigh that night! Rudolph’s is overjoyed that his long awaited dream has finally come true!

How very like Rudolph many of us are! There may be certain quirks in us that make us feel odd or out of place with others. Try as we may, we may not be able get rid of them and the truth is that those very quirks are there in every one of us. They are what makes us “us”! Instead of despising them, if we continue to believe in the best of ourselves and dream big, one day that very thing that we felt was our disadvantage/limitation can be turned around into our biggest advantage. Then we will realize thankfully why we had been given that so called “weakness” in our life. Just like it is Rudolph’s shiny red nose (that had initially made him the brunt of many a joke and made him feel so left out in life) which actually helps him to light the way for Santa to ride through the fog, similarly God can take the burden of our life and turn it into a blessing if instead of despising it, we would just surrender it into His All knowing hands.

Nugget # 85 Life lesson from a Green Mango!

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????Hi friends,

This week I’d like to share an inspirational message that struck me while I was in the kitchen today. As I scrutinized my Veggie compartment I came across 2 green mangoes. Thinking them to be raw, I picked them up and a drumstick thinking of making a mango and drumstick curry. After all the green mangoes looked not very promising and were not tender too.But surprise surprise, as I peeled one mango I saw a deep orange colour and that made me taste it. Would you believe it was one of the sweetest and most delicious mangoes I have ever tasted! Forget the curry, they are definitely gonna be dessert!;)

That set me thinking…. Isn’t this very much applicable to our lives as well? Very often life gives us chances or an opportunity which on the outward appearance doesn’t really look anything like what we would like to have and so we grudgingly go ahead and try to see what we can do just out of compulsion. But the truth is that when we actually begin to look at it closely and with patient and positive eyes, we will be able to find seeds of that which we have all along wanted or maybe even something better than that.

Those mangoes reminded me that we must be super slow to label /compartmentalize and quit being prejudiced or judgemental. And instead to be more welcoming and optimistic of every little thing or every single person that crosses our life. By keeping an open mind, who knows what we may actually learn?

Have a super sweet week!

Nugget # 80 Life is like a Xylophone!

xylophone

Hi friends,

Hope you all are doing well. It’s been a while now since I have been able to share something with you. The truth is that a lot has been happening and I’ve been pushing myself out of my comfort zones and inviting with open arms a wide variety of experiences. To be honest, it has not been all that comfy but the ride has been a good one and left me richer with precious memories and good life lessons.

The other day as I was picking up my son’s toys and placing them back in the box, I came across his xylophone. I just struck the bars and realized how differently odd each sound was. In fact there was hardly any melody or harmony to hear and yet as I slowly struck them from one end to the other I could hear the sweet musical tune of the xylophone that we usually hear and that made me think about the many different kinds of people we encounter. With some it’s an instant click and it’s great when we can effortlessly connect. But then this is not always the case. Often everything everyone says or does may not make sense to us. People think, behave and act differently from us and we from them. It is easy to surround ourselves with like- minded individuals but then where is the challenge in making beautiful music when every sound is similar? The real beauty lies in making something harmonious out of the chaotic.

Each individual is a unique and precious creation of the Master Craftsman and the people He has allowed in our lives are there for a definite and designed purpose. Our finite minds may never fully the grasp the ways of our Maker. It is only when we allow Him to work through us and strike every bar, that we hear such beautiful music that we may never have heard before!

th_bf-xylophone-smileyNugget of Life: Life is a Xylophone; make sure you lightly strike all the bars from one end to the other;   you may end up hearing the most beautiful tune ever!

Have a wonderful week!

Cheers,

Nugget # 79 Life is like a Garden!

15083-desktop-wallpapers-sunken-garden
“Life is like a garden. You reap what you sow. From your own fertile soil your seedlings do grow.”

Hi friends,

It’s been a long while since I have sat down and penned something and so it is with great joy that I share with you something that came to mind this morning. Hope it speaks something to you.

Each of our lives is like a garden that has been entrusted to our care. Meaning each of us is the Gardener to the garden of our life.

1)  Unique : No two plots or pieces of land are identical. Whatever we have; our families, our time, our talents, our friends, our relatives, our homes are where we cultivate our garden. We need to love and accept what we have been given and make the most beautiful garden out of it.

2) Free Choice : We are all given freedom to grow whatever we want in our garden. We can grow flowers or ornamental plants or fruits or vegetables or we may just leave it as it is. The choice is ours.

3) Investment Required: Once we have made our choice, we will have to invest into the garden. We need to give it time, energy, money in order to purchase the necessary tools, fertilizer, seed, etc. Some amount of sacrifice may be required if we want to do something worthwhile in life.

4) Ploughing the land : This means we actually dig out the hard soil of our garden and thus make it softer and ready to receive the seed we plan to sow. This refers to the teachability of the soil of our hearts to receive.

5) Uprooting the weeds: There may already be many weeds and other outgrowth that may spoil the garden and choke the good seed and so we will need to pluck out all of them to ensure a healthy environment for the proper growth of the plants we want to grow. This refers to the uprooting of our wrong mindsets and attitudes many which have grown strong roots as they have been there for a long time. This process may be time consuming, tiring and often even painful but it is inevitable if we want to have a beautiful garden.

6) Sowing good seed: The seed that we sow refers to the thoughts we meditate on , the words we speak and the actions we perform. If we speak life( positive, uplifting, encouraging words), we will sow life. Speaking death(negative words ,critical attitudes towards ourselves or others) will cause us to reap death.

7) Commitment to stick: Often on reaching this stage we may feel that our job is done. As actually we have completed the doing, we may get impatient to see the desired result but we are forced to wait patiently as digging up the soil is only going to destroy our hard work. This is a crucial time when we need to commit to stay till we get the desired result. Many times thinking that what we have been doing has not yielded results we may be tempted to give up our efforts to maintain what we have started. Just like we need to continue watering the garden and  giving it the necessary fertilizer and believing that one day we will see the result of our hard work, there are many times in life when we may have to just stay faithfully continuing what we know we have to do whether we feel like it or not.

8) Irrelevancy of Comparison: As mentioned in the 1st point each plot of land given was unique and the choices that we made were ours, the work we put into it, the seed we sowed were all different, then how can we compare our garden with another’s? Often times we may look over the fence and see our neighbours’ garden in full bloom while all we see in ours is brown patches of earth. We may then be envious or we may call them lucky, we may even feel our efforts fruitless and the waiting may suddenly seem longer but then we need to remember that they may have started long before us, they may have worked harder, their choice of crop may be different from ours and so in reality the comparison is really not at all relevant. Instead let us  enjoy the beauty of their garden and taste the sweetness of their fruit all the while believing that one day our garden too will be beautiful and then they too will rejoice with us.

animated-smileys-garden-007Nugget of Life: Your life is your garden and you are the gardener. Make sure you make the most beautiful garden that you can while you are here on earth. Surely, one day someone may stop by just to tell you how they admire the work of your hands!

Have a beautiful week!

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie
