Nugget # 26 Life is a GIFT

LIFE IS A GIFT, CHERISH IT!

Hi,

One of my close friends recently lost her husband quite unexpectedly. As I tried to comfort her in her grief, I just realized that this life that we all take for granted is truly a GIFT to be treasured and cherished.

A Gift is something that is given to us free and undeserved. And yet how often we look at the greener grass on the other side of the fence instead of enjoying what we have on our side of the fence? And if we are given a chance to get the other side ,we would definitely wish back that which we once had. Doesn’t every unmarried person sometime or other wish for the close companionship of marriage ? Doesn’t every married person sometime in life wish for the freedom of their single days? The unemployed wish they had a job and the employed are waiting for their vacation. The childless couple is frantically trying for a baby and the parent is screaming for some peace and quiet…. Sounds familiar? Well, it should – This is both my story and yours. And the irony of it all is that if by any chance we were granted exactly what we wished for, we would spend the rest of our lives miserable – wishing back what we once had.

It is human nature that we don’t realize the value of something unless we lose it. You know what I am talking about if you have ever searched for a safety pin when you needed one but couldn’t find one. On any other day we would ignore it -so small and insignificant a thing and yet how painstakingly we looked for it when it was not to be found and was needed? Isn’t there a lesson we can learn from this?No matter how small or insignificant a thing it may be in our life,it is ours and so let’s treasure it.For one day we may not have it.

I recently came across this gem as I watched the movie GUZAARISH

“ Life is very short, my friends. But it is long enough, if you live with all your heart. Break the rules. Forgive quickly. Kiss slowly. Love deeply. Laugh uncontrollably. And never regret anything that made you smile.” – Ethan Mascarenhas,GUZAARISH.

These are the magical words spoken by Ethan (the hero) who being immobilized for life by a spinal injury knows very well the value of all the little things that truly matter in this life.

Enjoy this touching Video which reminds us that we have ONE LIFE and we need to make time for the things that  truly matter before they are gone and we regret it!

Nugget # 25 Life lesson from 9/11

SMILE knowing that there’s a bigger picture!

Hi there, I recently came across this list of annoying little things that happened to some people on that fateful day 9/11. Can you believe it was these minor irritations that actually saved their lives?

1)The head of a major company survived the tragedy of “9/11” in New York because his son started kindergarten. Saved by a kid’s admission ?

2) Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to bring donuts.Saved by a bunch of donuts?

3)One woman was late because her alarm clock didn’t go off in time. Saved by a missed wake up call?

4) One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident. Saved by a traffic jam?

5)One of them missed his bus.Saved by missing a bus?

6)One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change. Saved by spilled coffee?

7) One’s car wouldn’t start. Saved by a mechanical failure?

8)One went back to answer the telephone. Saved by a telephone call?

9)One had a child that dawdled and didn’t get ready as soon as he should have.Saved by a kid’s dawdling?

10) The best one of all-  A man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning and set off for work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot. He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today. Saved by a band-aid?

Friends, you may call the above incidents coincidences or CHANCE ….. Each person is entitled to his own opinion; and I like to believe that in everyone of the above 10 situations it was the hand of God through these minor annoyances that actually saved them.

So the next time our morning seems to be going wrong,

– the children are slow getting dressed,

– you can’t seem to find the car keys,

– you hit every traffic light…

– miss an elevator…

– turn back to answer a ringing telephone…

let’s not get mad or frustrated; instead let’s just smile and say out loud … ‘Everything happens for a reason.’

Life is full of Surprises: VERSATILE Blogger Nomination?

Hi friends,

Life is full of surprises and the best thing about a surprise is that it comes when it is least expected but always brings along with it joy.

My surprise came today evening when a fellow blogger Holly [who writes an amazing blog describing her  travels and adventures as Au pair ]passed on her Versatile Blogger Nomination to me. My first reaction was definitely JOY as I shared the good news with my husband. My second reaction was to look up the word Versatile* since my Blog NUGGETS usually talks about ONE thing –  LIFE. But on looking the word VERSATILE up I realized  that NUGGETS qualifies as it touches  upon a wide range of subjects – literature, sports, parenting, poetry , philosophy, music, history  and draws a parallel of each to LIFE .* Hence it is both “multifaceted” and “flexible” which is the very definition of VERSATILE.   Thanks Holly for helping me realize that by nominating this Blog! 😉

Now the Rules:

1.  Thank the person who shared the award with you by linking back to them in your post.

2.  Pass this award to 15 recently discovered blogs and let them know that you included them in your blog post.

3.  List 7 things about yourself. (end of post.)

These are my recently discovered 15 nominees for the AWARD

Now 7 things about me:

Welcome to my world of paradoxes…

1)     I’m extremely simple and yet can be quite complex too.

2)     I’m a people person but not a people pleaser,

3)     I enjoy friendship but thrive on solitude,

4)     Love the promise of a new day but am a night owl,

5)     Thoroughly organized but  diversely creative.

6)      A true encourager and yet often too straightforward with criticism- …am working on it! 😉

7)     I keep my phone conversations to the minimum and yet could write the longest mails.

Well, that is my NUGGET about me…keeping it short, sweet and simple…

Thanks once again Holly for this lovely opportunity.

Each and every blog above deserves this nomination. Be sure to check them out.

Cheers,

Sparky laurie

Nugget # 24 LIFE BY MOTHER TERESA

1910-1997

There is hardly anyone who does not know, respect and love Mother Teresa. The Little Flower who spread the sweet fragrance of the Love of God wherever she went continues to live in our hearts. Her life of compassion and simplicity was her message and her powerful and loving words continue to encourage and inspire us even today. This post is a Tribute to this blessed woman who called herself  “a little pencil in the hands of God.” * [Click here  for a short Biography : information on her early years, her call to religious life and her work with the poorest of the poor in Calcutta.]

There are few in this world today who understand the true value of LIFE as well as blessed Mother Teresa did. Her philosophy of LIFE is summed up in this beautiful Video based on her Poem LIFE. Hope you enjoy it!

Nugget # 23 Life is like Seasons

Hi, this week I’d like to share a lesson that we can learn from Seasons. As the Seasons change, from spring-rainy-summer-autumn-winter, what is our reaction to each Season? This Collage of Seasons I made show some of our joyful reactions to each Season.

Sparky Laurie COLLAGE OF SEASONS

Inspite of being fully aware of the beauty of each Season, how often do we find ourselves waiting for a season change when going through some of the not so lovely phases of a particular season. Dripping sweat in summer we fantasize about snow. In the rainy season we look up into the skies longing for the faintest trace of sunlight to dry our clothes or to go out for a leisurely stroll in the park. Winters make us lazy. And then spring- every one’s immediate favorite; but what if every day was spring, how would we collect the lovely red leaves for our scrapbooks without autumn? Again without the monsoons how would we sail our paper boats or rain dance? Similarly how could we huddle by a warm and cozy fireplace drinking hot chocolate if there was no winter? Each season is good and we need seasonal changes. As the saying goes : “Variety is the spice of life”. Yet, there is no denying that we all have our favorites and my personal favorite has always been WINTER! Which is yours?

Now the analogy, Let us look at Our reactions to the Seasons of Our Lives. When we are infants, we want to grow up and go to school, when we get there, our eyes are on college, even before graduating ,our focus is on getting a job , then it is a promotion and then a career, a house, a marriage and then kids, and then grandkids ……and even before we know it, our lives suddenly stand still and we finally look into the mirror and see a wrinkled person whom we don’t recognize. Ruefully, we realize that it is our own reflection that we are staring at. All the while ; through every season we had been earnestly preparing to meet Life, failing to notice that she had been right beside us all the while.

Let this not be our sad story. Let us awake today to the season in our life and enjoy it to the fullest .

Nugget of Life:  “Revel in the freshness of Spring, Soak up the warmth of Summer, Relish the vibrance of Autumn, Face head on the crisp chill of Winter. Celebrate the Circle of Life.”-Chrissy Dewes.

Enjoy this lovely Video which reminds us of things we can be thankful for in each Season in Life:

Have a great week,

Cheers,

Nugget # 22 Life is like a blanket!

“Life is like a blanket too short. You pull it up and your toes rebel, you yank it down and shivers meander about your shoulder ; but cheerful folks manage to draw their knees up and pass a very comfortable night.”~Marion Howard

This week I’d like to share with you a lesson I learnt from the above humorous quote which brought a smile to my face and I hope to yours too ! 😉

Every one of us (whether young/old, tall/short, big/small, fat/thin) is provided with a custom-designed blanket which is made “too short”- [on purpose] just for us. This blanket is given to us to keep us warm from the cold of the night. If we pull it up, our toes will be cold, if we pull it down, our shoulders shiver. No matter which way we pull it up or pull it down, try to stretch it to its limit, nothing changes. Some of us may due to frustration just throw the blanket on the floor in anger but that only makes us colder and robs us of our sleep. We slowly learn that if we bend and draw up our knees, we can actually fully cover ourselves and thus sleep cozily cuddled under the very same blanket.

In life too there may be many things that we may not like or agree with but instead of fighting it and thus losing our joy, it is wiser to be flexible and accept gratefully that which comes to us and make the best of it. We thus will be able to pass the night comfortably ; enjoy our life to the fullest!

Nugget of Life: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot   change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Reinhold Niebhur

Good night, Sweet Dreams & Sleep tight!  Have a great week!

Cheers,

Sparky Laurie
