Nugget # 10 Life is not a race!

Life is not a race, do take it slower ….

This week I’d like to share a poem written by a terminally ill teenager in a New York hospital:

I think it says it all…we may have the most valuable lesson of life to learn from him….

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round?

Or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a butterfly’s erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down, don’t dance so fast.

Time is short, the music won’t last.

Do you run through each day on the fly?

When you ask, “How are you” Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed

With the next hundred chores running through your head?

You’d better slow down, don’t dance so fast.

Time is short, the music won’t last.

Ever told your child, we’ll do it tomorrow?

And in your haste not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch; let a good friendship die

Cause you never had time to call & say, “Hi”

You’d better slow down. Don’t dance so fast.

Time is short, the music won’t last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere

You miss half the fun of getting there.

When you worry and hurry through your day,

It is like an unopened gift….thrown away.

Life is not a race. Do take it slower

Hear the music, before the song is over.

NUGGET OF LIFE:  Enjoy the Dance of Life while the Music lasts!

Nugget # 9 Life is like a jigsaw puzzle!

“Life is like a Jigsaw Puzzle without the picture on the box”-Author Unknown

All of us are familiar with jigsaw puzzles. We usually start off by looking at the picture on the box and use that as a guideline to help us put the individual pieces where they belong. In the process of completing the puzzle, we may refer more than once to the completed picture when we are doubtful. It is exciting to watch how all the individual pieces finally come together and make the complete picture.

However, what if you were given all the individual pieces but no picture as a guideline? Would it be as easy or as fun? I doubt it…many of us would just push away the pieces for some other day. It is the uncertainty of knowing what to look for that actually makes the task seem more tedious than it should have been.

The same thing is applicable in our lives too. We are given a whole lot of pieces (our jobs/ careers/ health/ finances/spouses/children/relatives/friends/neighbors/societies/our responsibilities/duties/our dreams/our goals/our talents/our time/our spirituality/our interests/our hobbies, etc)….a million and one pieces that keep on increasing day by day. With no picture to guide us, we may get frustrated trying to fit in the available pieces one by one.

But what if the Creator of the Picture puzzle suddenly comes in and guides us piece by piece telling us which piece goes where. Suddenly, we don’t need to see the picture because we know that we are in safe hands and can see that we are progressing in the right direction.

As we slowly finish off the individual pieces, our excitement levels are at its peak. The best part is saved for the last and we get a surprise on seeing the completed picture at the end! Suddenly we realize that this was the best picture puzzle game that we have ever played.

NUGGET OF LIFE: Each day of your life is like another individual piece in the puzzle.Take care of the individual pieces and the big picture will take care of itself!

And for those of you who may be missing a piece in the jigsaw puzzle of your life, here is a clue: http://sparkylaurie.blogspot.com/2011/06/16th-june-2011-what-is-that-missing.html

 Cheers,

 Sparky laurie

Nugget # 8 Life is like an Ice cream!

Life is like an Ice cream !

Many years back when I was younger, I had to change schools. On the one hand,I was sad to leave my friends but on the other hand, excited to make new ones. Before leaving,I distributed my autograph book for them to fill out.Out of all the sribblings of my childhood friends, one autograph had always stood out as my favourite esply coz I loved the accompanying picture of a melting strawberry ice cream with it. Today 16 years later, that autograph still continues to be my favourite however for different reasons, today I see life-changing truth in it. That’s why I want to share it with you today. It was:“Life is like an ice cream, enjoy it before it melts!”

In this mad rush of life,we often find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of unending activity. As a day comes to a close,we happily scratch off the completed activities from our never ending To Do List, only to find ourselves updating it with new activities for tomorrow! I too believe in organized action for success and in making things happen rather than waiting for things to happen ….and yet, lately  find myself wondering ….. “Will I really be able to enjoy my ice-cream fully before it all melts away?”

It is so funny how we live our lives planning ahead as if everything in life could be forecasted! The real question we need to ask ourselves is “Do we truly realize how uncertain our life really is?” Come to think of it, do any of us definitely know whether we will be here alive and well tomorrow? We often safely associate old age with death and yet watch youngsters die long before their expected time leaving behind their old grandparents. Death is no respecter of persons or age/status/wealth/position/power/authority and yet we find ourselves running after these things in life. After all,“At the end of the game, the king and the pawn go back in the same box.”-Italian proverb

Agreed, this post may seem a bit gloomy when compared to my usual cheery, sparky posts, but the truth is that I’d like for this post to be a wakeup call for those of us well meaning individuals who keep postponing the enjoyment of the moment for a later tomorrow. We need to be kinder to ourselves and do the things that we really enjoy while we can! I am not advocating a total mindless spending resulting in unending credit card debts….Why do we always associate fun with spending more money ? Enjoyment need not always be expensive.Walking barefoot in the wet sand picking up seashells at the seaside, blowing soap bubbles for your baby to catch, walking into a library and enjoying the musty fragrance of books full of treasures to find, watching the fading sunset with a loved one, calling up your parents and telling them how much you love them, finding a long lost friend thru Facebook and arranging to meet up…..can all be things that can brighten up your days and add meaning to your life and definitely won’t cost a fortune.

What are those things that you have always wanted to do but never got down to doing?Would you like to make your own Bucket list today? For more thoughts about making your bucket list, please click below for my post  “FACE YOUR FEARS, LIVE YOUR DREAMS!” : http://sparkylaurie.blogspot.com/2011/05/16th-may-2011-face-your-fears-live-your.html

To quote Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:“Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant! Let the dead Past bury its dead!  Act, — act in the living Present!  Heart within, and God o’erhead!”

We need to learn to be mindful of what really matters: To enjoy our Ice cream before it melts….. To enjoy life while we can!

Nugget # 7 Life is like a box of Chocolates!

“Life is like a Box of Chocolates… You Never Know what you’re Gonna Get!”-Forest Gump

CHOCOLATE!!!What a yummy topic to write about! I mean, who doesn’t like chocolate? The apt question would be: which types of chocolate do you like best?

Is it Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, white chocolate, Orange/ Mint/ Strawberry/ Coffee Chocolate, Chocolate with hazelnuts/almonds? Coconut Chocolate like Bounty, chocolate with dates in the middle, fruit and nut chocolates, Unsweetened chocolate, patchi, galaxy, ferrero chocolate, crackle chocolates with rice crisps, candy coated chocolates like M& M, Chocolate with caramel filling like Mars/Snickers, chocolate wafers like Kitkat, chocolate flakes, chocolate chips, chocolate waffles, chocolate truffles, Swiss chocolate, Belgian Chocolate, French Chocolate, Mexican chocolate…..the list goes on….

Opening a box of assorted chocolates always provides us with a feast for the eyes- we find a wide range of chocolates of different shapes sizes and colors. Only when we taste, will we know the type chosen. Just like the uncertainty till one bites into the chocolate and the surprise one gets on realizing its flavor, life too offers us a wide variety of experiences-all in different shapes, sizes and colors. Some are our immediate favorites, some we may like, some we may learn to like, some we may not like and some we may spit out but until and unless we take the risk and open the box and start the tasting, the truth is we will never know which ones we like best.

Life offers each one of us a box of the best of chocolates. You may not like the one I like best and I may not like your favorite, but that’s alright. These chocolates are to be enjoyed, not to be compared or ranked bcoz the truth is we have all been given different boxes and different palates.

The worst thing in the world that we can do is to keep our box aside and watch others enjoying their chocolates. Start tasting what you have got. Some you may like, some you may not, but one thing is certain and that is the Master Chocolatier who knows you very well has hidden the one you like best ONLY in your box. Once we grab hold of this Nugget of Life, we can learn to enjoy our life like never before!

Happy tasting!

NUGGET OF LIFE: Enjoy your own special box of Chocolates, the best one for you is definitely in your box!

Nugget # 6 Life is a great big Canvas…

“Life is a great big Canvas, and you should throw all the paint you can on it.” ~ Danny Kaye

Throw all the paint you can!

Just like an artist uses color to make his painting beautiful, on the canvas of our life, we should throw all the beautiful colors that we can to make our lives as colorful as possible!

While thinking of something new to share from this quote, I came up with COLOURS

Many times in our conversation we use color to express our emotions e.g. red with rage, green with envy, a grey day, feeling blue, etc. Just for the fun of it, I’ve listed 10 common colors and some positive attributes associated with them:

1) RED -DETERMINATION, COURAGE, SPEED, BOLDNESS, EXCITEMENT

2) ORANGE- CHEERFULNESS, CREATIVITY, WARMTH, ENTHUSIASM & ENDURANCE

3) YELLOW-ENERGY, HOPE, JOY, OPTIMISM, IMAGINATION

4) GREEN- HEALTH, RENEWAL, GROWTH, YOUTH, GENEROSITY

5) BLUE- CALMNESS, FRESHNESS, UNITY, ORDER, LOYALTY

6) PURPLE- ROYALTY, NOBILITY, SPIRITUALITY, WEALTH, WISDOM

7) BROWN- HUMILITY, STABILITY, RELIABILITY, CASUALNESS, SIMPLICITY

8) BLACK- POWER, FORMALITY, SOPHISTICATION, STYLE, MYSTERY

9) GREY-SECURITY, INTELLIGENCE, DIGNITY, MODESTY, MATURITY

10) WHITE- PEACE, PURITY, GOODNESS, REVERENCE, INNOCENCE

Let us then throw all these colors of positive qualities onto the blank canvas of our life, so that at the end of it, we will have a beautiful painting.  Happy Painting!

NUGGET OF LIFE: Devote yourself to making the Canvas of your life YOUR ULTIMATE MASTERPIECE, for unlike the Artist who can make another one in case he messes up his first, yours is a ONE – TIMER!
