Nugget # 5 LIFE IS A MAZE OF PASSAGES

Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free & unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now & again checked in a blind alley. But always, if we have faith, God will open a door for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us.”-A J Cronin

As we stand at the doorway to enter the maze of life, we wish that it was simpler- maybe a straight and easy corridor…with no twists and turns and so no bumps and burns! However, the truth is that life is a maze of passages that take us to totally unexpected & unforeseen places. Many times, it is the “unknown” that fills us with anxiety about the journey ahead. With no guarantee that we will never lose our way/bump into a wall,we gather up our courage, set foot in the maze and start our journey. Abruptly, we find ourselves at a dead end. Disappointed & angry, we shed a few tears. But determined to make it, we get up and keep trying, carefully avoiding our previous mistakes. The path that we select may not be the right one but as long as we keep moving, we find ourselves less confused and more confident. As we reach closer to our destination, we find ourselves strangely amused by the challenging turnings, ironically enjoying the journey we initially dreaded! We keep moving on and suddenly reach a door. Curiously, we turn the door knob, startled; we find a shortcut that takes us straight to our destination. We realize ruefully that the journey is over!

Once again at the doorway, this time at the EXIT, we look back gratefully and realize that it was for a purpose that the maze was not a boring, straight and easy corridor. For it was this complicated, confusing and challenging maze of passages that tested and revealed to us- an inner strength and hidden potential lying dormant that we would otherwise never have known.

We reach home transformed, thanks to that complicated maze of passages!

Nugget # 4 LIFE is a Game of Cricket !

Inspired by the recent frenzy and excitement about the IPL Cricket Finals, I’m dedicating my latest post to all you Cricket-lovers out there! Though personally, I am no Cricket fan myself, I think there is good to learn from everything and today’s post is just about this game that drives a lot of you great people (including my hubby!)CRAZY and wild with excitement! 🙂 Hope you enjoy it!

“Life is a game of cricket, to be enjoyed with enthusiasm and zest and played in a friendly atmosphere without condemning or blaming the external factors. And even if one scores the occasional ‘duck’; no need to get too depressed for we all win some, lose some. There will be another opportunity to stage a comeback. Until the day one finally retires & can look back with a feeling of satisfaction that we gave our best always and ended with a good batting average.”-Sultan H Fazelbhoy

I truly admire the words of wisdom in the above quote.

The lesson I could draw out was: It truly doesn’t matter whether or not we WIN every game in LIFE. What is more important is to continue playing and learn from mistakes and get better each time. Just like every time a match is played, only one team wins .Similarly in life, we may lose some matches, however the important thing is NOT to STOP playing .As long as we continue to consistently improve each time we play, WE are definitely WINNERS and one day we can look back with a feeling of satisfaction that we have always played our best game and that ensured us a Good Batting average in the Game Of LIFE!

NUGGET OF LIFE: CONTINUE CONSISTENTLY PLAYING THE GAME.YOU ARE ALREADY A WINNER IF YOU ARE DOING YOUR BEST!

Nugget # 3 LIFE IS LIKE A CAFETERIA

“Life is like a Cafeteria. You take your tray, select your food and pay at the other end. You can get anything you want as long as you’re willing to pay the price. If you wait for people to serve you, you will wait forever. Life is like that too. You make the choices and pay the price.”-Author Unknown

Life is like a cafeteria!

Just like a good cafeteria will offer you a wide range of delicious food to choose from, life offers us a myriad of opportunities to choose from. The options are there before us and we need to grab hold of what we want before it is too late! Why do some succeed while others only remain to watch others succeed? This is not due to the lack of opportunity or availability of resources but due to the differences in response.

Inspired by the above quote, let me introduce you to 10 kinds of people standing in a Cafeteria line and each responding differently leading to his /her failure or success :

1) The person who doesn’t really know what he wants: Is it a sweet/savory, vegetarian /non vegan dish that he would like?-These kinds of people will never be satisfied simply because they don’t know what they really want. They need to spend some time and find out what they really want and then go get it and pay the price.

2) The person who knows what he wants but is not willing to take a risk for fear of appearing foolish or being mistaken: These people never achieve anything coz they believed their fears and not their heart to follow their dreams.

3) The one who selects exactly what the person in front of him took, not bcoz he wants that but bcoz he has minimized his risk by avoiding to make his own choices- This refers to those who play it safe in life by going with the current, doing what everyone else is doing and so avoid the risk of criticism or failure. These people appear to be doing great on the outside, however, in their hearts they know that they haven’t got what they really wanted as they have settled for something less!

4) Those who wait too long ,so that by  the time they have made up their mind, the bell rings and the cafeteria closes ! – Life is too short and uncertain to take forever to make our choices. I’d say enjoy what you can, while you can!

5)Those who go to the other extreme and make hasty ,irrational choices and buy too many of the same kind too quickly, thus ruining their chance of trying another delicacy-This refers to those kinds of people who thrive on instant gratification of the senses ,never considering the other options available and thus make foolish choices which they regret later.

6)Those who do not have enough money and so borrow from others and enjoy what they  like but later conveniently  forget to return the money.-This one is about those kind of people who forget to be grateful. The point to emphasize here is not the money but the ingratitude. You can pay back every dime and still have an ungrateful heart.

7)Those who have loaded pockets but miserly hearts and decide to go hungry rather than part with cash-In spite of having money, this type choose to go hungry, leaving just as they came.It is indeed ironical that sometimes the poor actually are richer than the rich. This refers to the miserly attitude of some people who never enjoy anything even if they can.

8)Those who come and check out their options, intend to buy but postpone their decision for a later time This refers to those kinds of workaholics who make enough money to buy the whole cafeteria and yet leave hungry! True, they may be too busy to sit down for a whole meal but they could surely have managed a few moments for a quick sandwich which would have given them more strength in their work. This refers to those people who are fun lovers at heart but spend all their life postponing and never end up having fun. They have everything in LIFE but sadly, they have no LIFE!

9)Then we can find the kind that come in check out the MENU and start finding fault and criticizing everything .They brag about the great cafeteria they could have run but the truth is they never do anything and they also leave hungry.-This refers to the those people who always find fault and criticize others who try to reach their dreams.Though these people may have greater ideas and even greater potential ,instead of using what they have and making the best of it,they choose to be negative and leave hungry!

10)And then there are those who check out the available options ,decide what they want, place it on the tray and sit down and enjoy their meal –These are the SUCCESSFUL people who know what they want, get what they want and enjoy what they want!

Question: Ask yourself which of the above 10 persons do I truly represent today by my life choices? Are there any changes that I’d like to make?

NUGGET OF LIFE:  SURVEY YOUR OPTIONS, CHOOSE WISELY AND THEN ENJOY! YOU PAY THE PRICE, SO MAKE SURE YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT!

Nugget # 2 Life is like having a Cuppa Tea

And for those of you chai lovers, here’s one for you to drink to…..

I’d like to share a quote from an Advertisement  I came across many years back –  I truly don’t remember the source….Do  let me know if you can help me recollect it.

I call it   LIFE IS LIKE HAVING A CUP OF TEA

“You sit by the window with a book in your lap, while soft wisps of steam curl up from the tea-cup. You lift the cup, assume a mid-distant gaze and take a careless little sip. Only to realize, somebody forgot to put in the sugar. Too lazy to limber up, you somehow struggle through that sugarless cup! Till you, ruefully, discover undissolved sugar crystals sitting at the bottom. By then, it is too late…..”  -Author unknown but greatly appreciated!

How true… At least for most of us….We live our life in bitter regret, maybe even blaming others for unachieved dreams and unfulfilled hopes. With our eyes on the distant horizon waiting for that day farther away in the future when we will finally see all our dreams come true and all our wishes fulfilled,we forget to make full use of the “NOW”, of what we already have,of  what is rightfully ours. Isn’t it true that it is our attitude that truly determines our altitude? If we give up on ourselves and assume a loser attitude assuming that the victory we are waiting for is too far away and so stop looking for it, we might just miss it when it does finally show up! 😦

I love this quote by Glorie Abelhas: “Good fortune shies away from gloom. Keep your spirits up. Good things will come to you and you will come to good things.”

NUGGET OF LIFE: LIVE EXPECTANTLY, ALWAYS SAY GOOD THINGS ARE ABOUT TO HAPPEN TO ME ; AND WHEN THEY DO,EMBRACE THEM, CELEBRATE THEM AND SHARE THEM!

Nugget # 1 LIFE IS LIKE A CUP OF COFFEE

Life is like a cup of Coffee:

LIFE IS LIKE A CUP OF COFFEE

While sipping my Morning Coffee, I stopped to reflect on what I could learn from this CUP of Coffee.

Let me share with you what I came up with…….

COFFEE is of different types: steaming hot coffee, luke- warm coffee, Cold coffee, Iced Coffee, strong coffee, light coffee, black coffee, frothy coffee ,coffee with milk, coffee with cream, coffee with lots of sugar, coffee without sugar, coffee with ice cream, Cocoa and coffee, Mocha, Coffee Latte, Espresso, cappuccino, filter coffee, instant coffee, NESCAFE, BRU, Brazilian Coffee, Arabian Coffee, Turkish Coffee ,you name it.

Whatever the type, the name of the beverage still remains the same. The difference is only in the temperature, pressure, type of bean, method of brewing or the accompanying ingredients.

Just Imagine if there was only one type of coffee…how very monotonous and boring!

Let us now draw a parallel  to our life. There are no two of us totally alike…we are all unique and amazingly one of a kind! Thank God for our Diversity!

We are different types of Coffee Beans: We are born with differences in nationality, colour, culture,  language, backgrounds, ethnic groups, family, talents  etc

Method of Brewing/Difference in accompanying ingredients: This refers to our upbringing, education, qualifications, religion, faith, value systems, attitudes, interests, political beliefs, strata of society, exposure by travel and interaction etc. which play a major role in development of our personality.

Temperature/Pressure: This refers to other factors that mould us like the hardships we may have faced/ the challenges encountered /experiences we may have gone through in life that leave a lasting impression on the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

No matter what our particular concoction, may we always remember to retain our unique flavor and never forget to enjoy the other brews out there which are after all, also Coffee!

Care for a Cup of Coffee? …

NUGGET OF LIFE: Learn to See the Unity in the Diversity…learn to see the true Beauty of Life!
